Overview
Posse Deputies provide law-enforcement support under the direct supervision of a Sheriff's Office employee.
A Colorado POST Reserve Academy and on-the-job field training are provided by the Sheriff’s Office for qualified candidates.
Upon completion of all training, a Posse Deputy must be able to perform ALL of the essential job functions listed below, unassisted, and at a pace or level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements. This necessitates a high level of physical ability to include vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, strength, and horsemanship.

Responsibilities- Effects arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers and weapons; and resorts to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
- Assists in the preparation of investigative and other reports, sketches, and drawings, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
- Exercises independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree.
- Operates a law enforcement vehicle during both the day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds more than posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow. Spends long period in and frequently enters and exits a law enforcement vehicle, which requires sitting, bending, and stretching. Spends long period on horseback which requires physical stamina of both horse and rider.
- Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.
- Gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers.
- Pursues fleeing suspects on horseback, on foot, and in vehicles and performs rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles; lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling up oneself over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches, and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces; and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
- From a variety of body positions, loads, unloads, aims, and fires handguns, shotguns, rifles, and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
- Performs searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
- Conducts visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
- Engages in law enforcement patrol functions that include such things as working rotating shifts, walking on foot patrol or riding on horse patrol, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
- Effectively communicates with people by giving information and directions, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
- Demonstrates communication skills in court and other formal settings.
- Detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal offenses and infractions and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.
- Endures verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of suspects and other people encountered in antagonistic environments.
- Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include directing traffic for long periods of time; administering emergency medical aid; lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations; and securing and evacuating people from areas.
- Processes and transports prisoners using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.
- Puts on and operates a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are being deployed.
- Extinguishes small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.
- Reads and comprehends legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of such documents as citations, affidavits, and warrants.
- Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
- Assists in county search and rescue operations on horseback, on foot, and in vehicles.
Qualifications
Successful applicants will be required to meet all of the following qualifications prior to hire:- An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check. As marijuana is an illegal substance under federal law, testing positive for marijuana (medical or otherwise) or any other substance for which the county tests will result in the contingent offer of employment being revoked. Successful completion of the drug screen is defined as obtaining a negative result.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
- Pass Pre-employment Questionnaire
- Pass horse skills test
- Pass oral board interview
- Pass in-depth background investigation, including criminal history and financial status.
- Pass polygraph exam
- Pass psychological assessment and medical exam, including drug testing
- Must have full access to a horse and horse trailer at all times.
- Current first aid and community CPR certificates required by date of hire
- Cannot have a felony conviction
- No convictions involving Domestic Violence
- No use of illegal drugs within the past five years
