    What's this Job All About?
    The role of the Northside Branch Library Assistant is to assist the County Librarian in the general operations of the Princeton and Maxwell branch libraries, with some coverage at the main branch in Colusa. This includes checking materials in and out for patrons, shelving materials, providing excellent customer support, and assisting with programming at those branches. Excellent customer service is essential, as this position will spend most of its time on the main floor of the branches serving patrons, advocating for their needs, and generally operating the library for public use. The library assistant will need to efficiently manage multiple tasks, follow library procedures, and be dependable.

The library uses partnerships with other institutions to connect patrons with services and help; engages and supports community development; and works to alleviate illiteracy in Colusa County. These services are intended to improve the quality of life for current and future generations. The library preserves and shares local history; provides a plethora of educational, cultural and recreational programs for all ages that support literacy, family and community strengthening, and a general enjoyment of reading. As a safe “third space” the library is a dynamic, socially responsive community hub that serves as a nexus of diversity and a lifeline for the most vulnerable among us. The library’s literacy program services to assist adult learners to improve their reading levels, school readiness, employment opportunities and reading enjoyment.

    Supervision & Examples of Duties

    Library Assistant I - Receives general supervision from supervisory or management staff.

    May provide technical supervision to part-time clerical staff.

    Qualifications

    Library Assistant I

    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Experience: Six (6) months of experience in libraries, teaching, bookstores, or related clerical work involving working directly with the public.

    Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Additional training in secretarial science or library science is highly desirable.

    License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.

    Supplemental Information

    The successful applicant can anticipate a starting salary ranging from $16.73 to $17.58 per hour.

    The entire salary range consists of 15 steps ranging from $16.73 to $26.17 per hour. Steps 1-6 are annual merit steps with approximately 5% difference between each step, based on successful performance. Steps 7-15 are additional merit steps, requiring 2 years of satisfactory performance at the previous step. Steps 7-14 provide 2.5% increases, while Step 15 offers a 5% increase. The final salary offered will depend on the applicant's experience and qualifications, ranging from steps 1 to 15.

    The County of Colusa, nestled in the heart of the Sacramento Valley approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento and 100 miles northeast of the San Francisco Bay Area, is a vibrant community rich in history and tradition and, offering a wonderful environment in which to live, work and play.  The County, with approximately 22,000 residents, includes two incorporated cities; Colusa, which is the county seat, and Williams.  The local economy is largely agriculturally based producing crops valued at more than $900 million each year and exporting farm commodities throughout the United States and to about seventy countries worldwide.
