    Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity.

    About the Position:
    Performs mid to high journey-level operational tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of complex water and wastewater treatment systems, processes and facilities. May provide daily leadership and direction to Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators I & II as delegated by Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator IV.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
    • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to three years of operation and maintenance of advanced, complex water and/or wastewater treatment facilities.
    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:
    All Assignments:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
    Depending on job discipline obtain one of the following:
    Water Assignment:
    • Must possess upon hire or promotion, and maintain a Grade 3 operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the discipline of Water Treatment.
    Wastewater Assignment:
    • Must possess upon hire or promotion, and maintain a Grade 3 operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the discipline of Wastewater Treatment.
    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment.

    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
    • Oversees the operation and maintenance of plant equipment and processes related to water, wastewater and advanced water treatment systems during an assigned shift.
    • Supervises employees and coordinates personnel-related activities to include, but not limited to: training, approving work schedules, recommending/approving personnel actions, coaching and counseling, establishing performance goals, and writing performance evaluations.
    • Works to maximize efficient operation of assigned water or wastewater facilities that include reclamation, advanced water treatment, arsenic treatment, conventional and micro-filtration treatment as well as operation of the Central Groundwater Treatment facility.
    • Ensures facility appearance is acceptable and work environment is safe, clean and orderly by directing activities, such as washing equipment and machinery, painting, grounds maintenance and other custodial duties.
    • Conducts facility tours for individuals and groups ranging from technical interest engineers to elementary school children.
    • Performs and assists maintenance staff and basic facility maintenance of assigned facility as directed.

    • Perform laboratory procedures and maintenance functions requiring manual dexterity and precision movements.

    • Exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, climbing stairs, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight up to (50 pounds for a distance of 25 feet).
    • Seldom sedentary and includes walking or moving. Work sometimes involves climbing elevations; requires moderate muscular exertion and lifting.
    • Moderate exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances.
    • Work rotating shifts, weekends, overtime and a call-out schedule.
    • Travel to/from various work locations.
