As an Environmental Services Plans and Permits Technician (Temporary) you will act as the public’s first point of contact to assist with questions and concerns involving Solid Waste, Watershed Management (Erosion, Flood and Stormwater), and the Administration Divisions within the Department of Environmental Services.
In your new role, you will inform and guide customers in the preparation of various permits that may include Watershed Management (flood, erosion land disturbance) and assist callers with questions concerning the Wake County Solid Waste Division. You will make important determinations regarding whether applications and plans meet applicable ordinances, state statutes and federal laws. Our in-house training will teach you an understanding of plans and permits complexities, customer demands, different communication options and implications of various ways to accomplish a customer's goal. The position works across departments and jurisdictions to advance projects and communicate delicate information.
This position will require that you work at various work locations. On Mondays, you will be assigned to work at one of two of our Solid Waste Facilities (7:00 am- 3:00 pm) and Tues-Thurs (8:00 am -5:00 pm) at the Wake County Office B uilding in beautiful and lively downtown Raleigh surrounded by award-winning restaurants, shopping, outdoor parks, historic buildings, museums, street festivals and more. About Our TeamEnvironmental Services is comprised of divisions that provide outreach, collaborate with stakeholders, serve customers, and enforce regulations to protect our natural resources and increase community resiliency. Areas include: solid waste disposal, recycling, environmental education, soil erosion prevention, stormwater and floodplain management, watershed management plan review, animal shelter operation, and animal control. The Environmental Services Department advances planning in these areas to support Wake County for decades to come.
The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - High school diploma or GED
- Two years of experience in the construction industry and/or customer service
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - Bachelors Degree in related field
- 30 credit hours of science
- Experience working in a permitting office and/or call center
- Fluent in English and Spanish (written and verbal)

- Ability to provide excellent customer service to citizens and internal staff members
- Knowledge of various types of permits
- Ability to understand site plans, recorded maps and conduct deed research
- Knowledge of PC functions, and standard MS Office products such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing
- Ability to prioritize time and tasks to best achieve daily work assignments
- Ability to work well independently as well in a team environment
- Ability to adapt to changing work volumes
