    STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION - The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California (Cal Poly) is excited to invite applications for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 2025.

    The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and master's level courses, and support and expand curricular development in structural engineering. The key duties of this role encompass teaching, research, and service. We seek a candidate with expertise in general structural design (including reinforced concrete, steel, and timber), along with a specialization area such as sustainable infrastructure, bridge engineering, marine structures, multi-hazard mitigation, novel structural systems, machine learning/artificial intelligence in structural design, seismic hazard and risk assessment, or probabilistic hazard analysis. Candidates with industry experience, a potential for securing external research funding, and a deep commitment to teaching are preferred.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (a) teaching a broad array of fundamental classes and laboratories in structural engineering as well as upper division and graduate courses in area(s) of specialization; (b) engaging in activities related to service in the form of student club advising, curriculum development, and shared governance; (c) supervising undergraduate and graduate (master's)-level research; (d) developing and maintaining externally-funded research programs; (e) collaborating with other faculty on curricular, research and professional development interests.

    Salary will be commensurate with the education and experience of the individual selected. Qualified candidates with industry experience are encouraged to apply. Anticipated hiring range: $106,0000 - $118,000 per year.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

    The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department has two separate B.S. degree programs with approximately 650 undergraduate students in the Civil Engineering Program and 250 in the Environmental Engineering Program. Both programs are ABET accredited. The Department’s undergraduate programs are consistently rated as among the best in the U.S. for non-Ph.D. granting institutions, and the department proudly supports extremely active and highly regarded student chapters of the Air and Waste Management Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and Engineers without Borders. The Department also offers an M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with approximately 50 active graduate students.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in civil, structural or architectural engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution or international equivalent is required for appointment. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered but must provide proof that the doctorate was awarded prior to or by the start of the appointment.

    Candidates must have a strong commitment to teaching excellence and laboratory-based instruction, dedication to continued professional development and scholarship, and a broad-based knowledge of structural engineering. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated ability in written and oral use of the English language is expected.

    The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The ideal candidate will show evidence of attention to and/or the potential to contribute on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion across their teaching, scholarship, and service.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Preference will be given to those who can show evidence of working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.

    P.E and S.E. licensure and industry/consulting experience are desirable. Previous teaching experience is preferred (but not required). Preference will be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities to the role.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
