    POSITION TITLE: Tenure Track Faculty - Chemistry

    DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

    The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees, including concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master’s degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. Our degree programs include a strong focus on instrumentation and hands-on experience. We place a high value on faculty mentored research for undergraduates and graduate students. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in high schools in the Sacramento region.

    POSITION DETAILS:

    We are searching for an individual who is passionate about teaching entry-level chemistry, and is committed to fostering student success. Beyond a commitment to teaching entry-level Chemistry, the successful applicant will contribute to upper-division and MS-level courses in their area of expertise, and develop a research program that engages undergraduate and graduate students.

    As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and awardee of the Seal of Excelencia certification, Sacramento State is hiring a cohort of faculty who will support our commitment to Latinx/e student success during the 2024-25 tenure-track hiring cycle. We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research, and/or service in and with the Latinx/e community. Successful candidates will have demonstrated two or more of the four Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria (see Required Qualifications below).

    This is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The classification annual salary range for this position is $71,100.00 - $151,128.00, with an anticipated annual salary of $74,642.00, depending upon qualifications and experience.

    JOB DUTIES:
    • Teaching courses in entry-level chemistry
    • Teaching upper division and graduate courses in the applicant’s area of expertise
    • Advising students
    • Participating in committee assignments and community service
    • Contributing to the development of departmental facilities, programs, and curricula in chemistry and biochemistry
    • Developing a program of scholarship in chemistry or biochemistry involving undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Aggressively seeking external funding

    Normal teaching loads are 3-4 classes per semester (lectures and labs).

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Education: Ph.D. in chemistry or biochemistry completed by August 2025
    • Special Knowledge and Abilities: Applicant must possess a strong background in general chemistry and further expertise in a chemistry subdiscipline (Physical, Inorganic, Organic, Biochemistry, Analytical, or Chemical Education). Applicants must have experience and a strong desire to teach entry-level Chemistry, and the ability to teach upper division/master's level lecture courses in their subdiscipline. The applicant must have the ability to develop curricular materials, to instruct students in modern methods/instrumentation, and to develop independent research projects involving undergraduate and graduate students and to compete for external grants.
    • Experience: Experience teaching entry-level college chemistry is required. Applicants must have sufficient research experience to be able to develop a research program in chemistry, biochemistry or chemical education.
    • Latinx/e Student Success Cohort criteria: Applicants must demonstrate two or more of the following:
      • Excellence in teaching Latinx/e students;
      • Effective service (e.g., advising, mentoring) to Latinx/e students;
      • Research, scholarship, and/or creative artistic expression focused on the Latinx/e community;
      • Knowledge (professional background and/or training experiences) that advances our institutional commitment to Latinx/e student success.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Independent teaching experience and the ability to implement teaching strategies to foster student success in entry-level courses.
    • The ability to utilize technology or other innovative teaching strategies to improve student success.
    • Experience teaching a diverse student population.
    • Post-doctoral research/teaching experience.
