General Description and Classification Standards

The City of Atlanta Department of Aviation (DOA) is seeking a highly skilled Sustainability Engineer to join our dynamic Sustainability team. The successful candidate will provide sustainability engineering direction, inter-disciplinary coordination and leadership to the Planning and Development design staff in execution of Department of Aviation design projects. Provide support to the Capital Improvement Program through design reviews and coordination on related projects. Explore innovative sustainability solutions for application at the Airport to help reach net zero goals.

This position reports to the Director of Sustainability. This position manages and organizes resources to accomplish specific sustainability task assignments in the areas of project and facility management, design and design management, and construction management. This is a highly experienced professional who routinely exercises project leadership over complex projects, trains other professionals, or serves as a specialized subject matter expert in one or more specific areas. This level would be expected to have noticeably greater leadership or technical responsibilities than the Senior level.

Supervision Received

Works independently and only sees a supervisor occasionally for administrative supervision on assignments given in terms of broad general objectives, limits and organizational priorities.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
  • 10 years of progressively responsible sustainability design experience covering buildings, bridges and other miscellaneous structural forms.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Professional Engineer registration in Georgia
  • Thorough familiarity with FAA design circulars
  • Twenty plus years’ experience with hands-on airport/airfield design or operations
  • Experience with implementation of energy efficiency, water conservation, waste diversion, or other sustainability measures
  • Experience with successful implementation of sustainability in construction projects
  • Working knowledge of City of Atlanta contracts/procurement procedures
  • Ability to handle conflicting project demands, set priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and research skills
  • Familiarity with achievement of sustainability certifications such as LEED, Envision, and ParkSmart
  • Experience with energy modeling
  • Solid understanding of emissions reduction measures for aviation industry
  • Strategic problem-solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills
  • Experience with successful implementation of water- and energy-reducing measures
  • Experience with waste management and recycling for a large facility

Licensures and Certifications

Valid State Issued Driver’s License required.
