The Position

Highway Maintenance Supervisors supervise skilled and semi-skilled personnel engaged in restoring roadway surfaces and restoring or constructing slopes, shoulders, culverts, structures, fixtures and landscaping.

Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This position is located within District I, (either Las Vegas or a rural maintenance station). The reporting location will be determined by the District Engineer and may change in the best interest the Department. Incumbent will assist the Highway Maintenance Manager by supervising maintenance personnel; planning, coordinating, monitoring, and inspecting routine maintenance activities and major betterment projects; coordinating equipment, material, and resource needs; monitoring work progress and productivity of up to five maintenance crews including preparing, reviewing, and evaluating reports to track productivity, costs, resources, and equipment usage. Incumbent will also work with department staff to identify upcoming betterment needs, participate in betterment reviews; assist in preparing budget estimates and project planning charts for upcoming maintenance seasons; assist district leadership with personnel issues and provide training, support, and guidance in employee evaluations and disciplinary actions. **PLEASE NOTE: THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED IN EITHER LAS VEGAS OR RURAL AREA, DEPENDING ON DEPARTMENTS PREFERENCE AND REQUIRES TRAVEL UP TO 50% OF THE TIME.**

The incumbent will also assist maintenance personnel by responding to emergency situations from traffic control for all incidents, both natural and manmade, to removing debris in the travel lanes or similar unplanned events that require an immediate response to protect the public. When these events occur, maintenance personnel are called out 24 hours a day in order to promptly alleviate or at least warn the driving public of the condition. This position may be required to work alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. Typical schedules are four 10-hour or five 8-hour shifts, but may include some variation depending on the needs of the appointing authority. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience supervising, planning and scheduling the work of a highway maintenance crew engaged in a variety of highway maintenance activities; OR two years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor I in Nevada State service OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in these positions must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment. A valid drivers license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Additional Position Criteria A valid Nevada Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), is required within 6 months of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment Requires travel up to 50% of the time The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation.
