The Sheriff's Office is looking for a self-motivated, hardworking, detail-oriented Evidence/Property Technician to join their law enforcement team. If you thrive with organizing and prioritizing tasks to meet demands, then consider a career with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office!

The Evidence/Property Technician under general supervision, receives, organizes, preserves, secures, transports, and releases property/evidence.

Examples of DutiesEssential:
  • Receives, tags, and stores property/evidence from crime scenes
  • Prepares narcotics and fingerprints for analysis by the Department of Justice
  • Transports fingerprints and narcotics to the Department of Justice for analysis, and destroys narcotics according to legal and administrative procedures and practices
  • Researches case dispositions and case files to determine the rightful owner of property
  • Completes Department of Justice checks on individuals who claim weapons
  • Acquires court orders for the destruction or return of property
  • Releases property to victim/suspect when appropriate
  • Testifies in court regarding the chain of evidence
Important:
  • Enters data on property/evidence into the property system
  • Transports and stores bio-hazardous material/chemicals, and negotiates pick-ups for the destruction and disposal of bio-hazardous material
  • Answers telephones and processes requests from victims/suspects
  • Types correspondence to victims, suspects, and reporting parties in response to requests for the return or destruction of property
  • Orders and stocks supplies as needed
  • Assists in retrieval of property, accompanying deputies on search warrants, as needed

Education and Experience Required
Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized course work in property/evidence management from an accredited college or university. Two years of experience performing staff work similar to the Legal Office Assistant II classification in Nevada County may be substituted for the supplemental specialized course work from an accredited college or university in property/evidence management.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid California driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Physical Demands and Working ConditionsProficiency in operating tools and equipment for property and evidence processing, along with standard office equipment. Physical agility to perform tasks like grasping, bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strong visual acuity to read computer screens and printed materials. Effective verbal and auditory interpersonal skills in person and over the phone.

Working in controlled exposure to chemicals, bodily fluids, and other potentially hazardous materials collected as evidence.

Retirement
The County is a member of the CalPERS retirement system and provides the opportunity for voluntary contributions to a 457 deferred compensation account through Nationwide by way of pre-tax and Roth payroll deductions.
