Recreation Specialist (Adaptive & Inclusive Recreation Program)

Full-time position available with the Parks & Recreation Department, Community Services Division located at 4600 E. 63rd St.
Salary Range: $17.35-$26.47/hour
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., some nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Assists in planning, implementing, and evaluating adaptive and inclusive programs and events within the Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation program division.
• Assists as an inclusion support staff for participants with disabilities in traditional programs.
• Demonstrates ability to adapt various activities and events based on accommodations for participant needs.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of various disabilities and impairments.
• May act as a lead worker.
• Instructs various age groups in a number of specialized recreation activities.
• Understands community social and economic conditions so as to determine the recreational needs of the community served.
• Effectively interprets and explains recreation program to community and civic groups, individuals and to assigned workers.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, municipal officials, community groups, area leaders and the general public.
• Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

REQUIRES high school graduation and 6 months of experience in recreational activities. May be required to possess a valid state-issued driver's license in accordance with the City of KCMO policies. Must pass a preemployment drug screen as prescribed by the City. Preference given for experience in recreation activity working with individuals with disabilities.

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
