The City of Laguna Beach is inviting a driven and passionate Aquatics Coordinator to lead our exciting aquatic and recreation programs. You’ll be the face of the City’s pool facility, overseeing daily operations, working closely with the Laguna Beach Unified School District, and providing excellent customer service.

In this role, you’ll mentor and manage a team of 20 year-round staff and up to 40 in the summer months, teach swim lessons, and help coordinate water sports. You’ll also play a key role in supporting the recreation division with special events and summer camps during the upcoming pool facility renovation in 2026. During this project you'll ensure continued aquatics programming and community updates.

The City’s pool facility is preparing to undergo a complete renovation beginning in 2026. The incumbent will continue to work closely with the aquatics community during this project to preserve programming and keep the community updated on the process, as well as supporting the Recreation Division’s special events, summer camps, and other key functions.

Qualifications

Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Social Services, recommended but not required.

Experience: At least two years of experience in organized recreation work.

License / Certificate Requirements: Due to the performance of some field duties, which may require the operation of a personal or City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

The following certifications is not required to apply but must be obtained before starting:
  • Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid/Emergency Oxygen certification

The following certifications is not required to apply but must be obtained within the first 6months of employment:
  • Certification as a Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor
  • Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator Certification

This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill future vacancies in the same or lower classifications.

Application/Selection Process: This recruitment will be used to establish an Eligibility List and may be used to fill vacancies within departments across the City. Retirement: The City offers membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. 2% at 62 for PEPRA CalPERS members, or 2.5% at 55 for Classic CalPERS members.

Health Coverage: The City covers the medical and dental insurance premium costs for employee-only and provides a contribution towards dependent premium costs. A medical insurance waiver program is available for employees covered by medical insurance other than the City’s medical insurance.

Vacation: Vacation leave accrues at a rate of 96 hours per year. This increases to 136 hours per year after five years of service, and to 176 hours per year after nine years of service. A cash-out option exists for accrued vacation time.

Holiday: The City provides 90 hours for 11 paid holidays per year.

Sick Leave: Sick leave accrues at a rate of 80 hours per year. Unused sick leave is available for cash-in at 50% value into your Retirement Health Savings (RHS) account.

Retirement Health Savings Plan: The City, on your behalf, deposits a monthly pre-tax contribution of $100 into your RHS account.

Life Insurance: The City provides a life insurance benefit in the amount of $50,000, including coverage for Accidental Death and Dismemberment and Long-term Disability.

Pay Plan: The basic pay ranges are composed of 8 steps, with each step varying by approximately 5%.

Acting Pay: Employees will receive an additional 5% of their current base salary for working out of classification for 15 or more consecutive workdays.

Alternate Work Schedule: City Hall is currently operating on a 9/80 work schedule. Other work schedules may be available including, but not limited to, a 4/10, 9/80, 5/8 or other work schedule as may suit the operational needs of the City. Alternate work schedules are subject to City Manager approval.
