EMT/Firefighters are responsible for the protection and preservation of life and property by responding to emergencies and through the performance of firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Work often requires the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and the IAFF.

The candidate assessment is a 15-45 minute, self-administered psychometric assessment. It measures reasoning and problem-solving skills, plus 25 traits, or dimensions of personality, intended to measure an individual’s characteristics for the purpose of determining the best fit for employment in a specific position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT AS EMT/FIREFIGHTER

1. Be at least 18 years old

2. Been a non-smoker/non-user of tobacco (any form) for at least one (1) year prior to application, remain smoke free during application process, and agree not to smoke or use tobacco (in any form) on or off duty during the tenure of their employment.
3. Florida Statues 633.412: Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor relating to the certification or to perjury or false statements, or a felony or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more under the law of the United States or of any state thereof or under the law of any other country, or dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States. “Convicted” means a finding of guilt or the acceptance of a plea of guilty or nolo contendere, in any federal or state court or a court in any other country, without regard to whether a judgment of conviction has been entered by the court having jurisdiction of the case.
4. Be able to pass a Broward College administered Water Survival Exercise (Swim Test):
  • Applicant will enter the water
  • When the instructor advises, applicant will kick off the wall and swim 25 yards to the other side of the pool
  • Once the applicant reaches the other side of the pool, the applicant will touch the wall, immediately turn around, kick off the wall and swim 25 yards back
  • Exit the pool

5. Possess a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters
6. Possess State of Florida EMT License
7. Possess an American Heart Association BLS - CPR & AED CARD or BLS for Healthcare Provider card by the A merican Red Cross (CPR &AED)
8. Possess Emergency Vehicle Operator License (EVOC)
9. Be able to pass a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by The National Testing Network

List tickets even if they do not appear on our driving record or you attended traffic school and no points are listed on your driving record.

7. EMERGENCY VEHICLE OPERATOR CERTIFICATE (EVOC) - Certificate must show minimum 16-hour course.

8. AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION (AHA) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) CARD - CPR & AED OR BLS FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER CARD BY THE AMERICAN RED CROSS (CPR & AED)

9. DD214 MILITARY RELEASE FORM (if applicable) MEMBER 4 COPY (if Applicable) . Your DD214 must show type of separation and character of service to be acceptable.

11. COURT DISPOSITION (if applicable) - All documents related to any criminal convictions to include police report and court disposition must be turned in at time of application.

Additional Requirements:
Part of this qualification process is an accurate assessment of the character of the candidate. Much emphasis is placed upon your character, and as such, indications of your honesty and integrity begin with the submission of your application. All information must be true, accurate and without omission on this and all other forms submitted for processing, as well as in all other phases of the testing process. This is a critical facet, which will be verified via a comprehensive background investigation.
Areas of questioning will include, but not be limited to, the following:
1. Any past criminal activity on the part of the applicant
2. Completeness and truthfulness of all statements made during the selection process
3. Any past or present use of drugs

The present standards of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Department would DISQUALIFY an applicant if any of the following were applicable:

1. Use of illegal drugs or use of any tobacco products in any form, including products containing nicotine, within ONE YEAR of the date of the application being submitted.

2. Any use of illegal drugs after having been employed by a fire agency, or in a firefighter or medic capacity (including Military Service as a firefighter or medic).

3. Accumulation of eight (8) points of more within the past thirty-six (36) months. Four (4) or more moving violations within the past thirty six (36) months (regardless of adjudication withheld for points) and no more than one (1) moving violation in the six (6) months prior to application.

4. A suspension of driver's license within the past thirty-six (36) months.

5. A conviction (or case pending ) for DUI, DWI, or Hit and Run within the past five (5) years.

6. Any significant negative driving history determined by management review of all facts.

These are guidelines and are not limited to the items listed in this package. A background investigation will be conducted as part of the testing process to determine if the "moral character" of the candidate is appropriate for employment as a EMT/Firefighter. "Moral Character" is determined by examination of the life experiences of the candidate including, but not limited to, the above factors. Other factors, such as past illegal drug use, history of criminal activity, incidents of theft, prior work history, and driving history, will be considered.

Currently employed by a Fire Rescue Department but interested in joining our team? Don’t lose the service time that you have put in at another organization. Newly hired Firefighters may be permitted to purchase up to five (5) years credited service based upon prior employment as a firefighter/paramedic with a federal, state, county, fire district, or municipal fire department, provided the member surrenders any credited service and retirement benefits (excluding a return of employee contributions or a military pension).
