Position Summary

As an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life-saving treatment in Southern Nevada, UMC serves as the anchor hospital of the Las Vegas Medical District, offering Nevada’s highest level of care to promote successful medical outcomes for patients.

We are home to Nevada's ONLY Level I Trauma Center, Designated Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Care Center, and Transplant Center. We are a Pathway Designated facility by ANCC, and we are on our journey to Magnet status.

This position is considered AT-WILL and will serve at the pleasure of the CEO.

Position Summary:
Under the direction of Assistant Chief Nursing Officer for Critical Care Services, is responsible for planning, organizing and directing of the operations and staff of the Critical Care Services (Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit, Medical Cardiac Unit/Cardiovascular Step-Down Unit, Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Adult ED's/Low Acuity Stabilization-Holding Area; Medical and Surgical/Neuro Sciences Intensive Care Units, Burn Care Unit-1300, and the Intermediate Care Units, 3-West and 3-South). In conjunction with the other Clinical Directors, ACNO and the CNO upholds the standards of nursing practice and implement cost-effective programs to ensure that the highest level of safety and quality patient care is being delivered. The Clinical Director actively engage and partner with stakeholders to support shared leadership and to resolve issues, and meet the professional needs of those who participate in the assigned division, units, programs, and services within their respective scope.

Job Requirement

Education/Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. A Master's Degree in Nursing or a healthcare related field or the ability to successfully complete a postgraduate degree within three (3) years from the date of hire. Five (5) years of recent clinical experience in the areas of responsibility and three (3) years experience in a clinical supervisory role.

Professional level experience is defined as being employed in an FLSA exempt/salaried status position.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
Current State of Nevada License as to Practice as a Registered Nurse.

PREFERENCES WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WHO DOCUMENT THE FOLLOWING:
  • Internal UMC employee
  • Previous leadership experience within at least two of the following: BCU, BCT, MERT/Rapid Response, SICU, MICU, etc.
  • A leadership style conducive to shared decision-making by supporting active staff nurse/leader collaboration to improve unit teamwork, the unit work environment, and the quality and safety of clinical care on the unit.
  • Understands the nursing culture fostered by achieving Pathway to Excellence and Magnet designations and is openly willing and able to encourage unit staff in their evolution.
  • Is self-directed, can manage multiple competing priorities, and can accomplish outcomes and generate quality work products by focusing on appropriate unit, division, and nursing department priorities.
  • Possesses leadership maturity, effective relational skills, and a high degree of self-awareness and emotional intelligence.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements

Knowledge of:
Global and regulatory and compliance standards specific to area of responsibility; labor relations; Nevada Nurse Practice Act and Nevada statutes affecting the hospital as a public and healthcare entity; Shared Leadership; Magnet designation; models of nursing practice and care delivery; current trends in healthcare, financial modeling especially productivity and healthcare reimbursement in a managed care environment; principles and practices of personnel management, including planning and organizing work, delegating authority, motivating subordinates, appraising performance and administering discipline; principles and practices of nursing that optimize patient care; principles of nursing administration and organization; patient care standards mandated by regulatory agencies; change management and organizational development; advanced leadership skills, managerial acumen; developing, and partnering with diverse stakeholders in a complex hospital system environment

Skill in:
Planning, organizing, developing and directing nursing and related services for a large acute care hospital; directing the developing and implementing of effective policies and procedures; understanding, interpreting and applying laws, rules, regulations and policies related to nursing and hospital administration; leading, managing, delegating, and communicating; operating Microsoft Office tools; serving as a role model in a professional manner and accountability; managing, interpreting, and communicating effectively with data; speaking effectively to a variety of audiences, making formal and informal presentations and effectively message key concepts and strategic priorities to others in a credible manner.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Mobility to work in typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, including stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, and strength to examine and treat varied patients, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. Strength and agility to exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
