Job Description:

Overview

In search of a highly responsible person to function as the Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Sarasota. This position is focused primarily on Parks planning, maintenance, operations, and City-wide landscaping of public property. This position will work under general supervision of the Director and supervises the Landscape Division operations, park maintenance, project construction of parks and non-park areas, budgeting, natural systems design and management, and performs other related duties as required. The ideal candidate is able to manage diverse operations and a sizeable staff of multidisciplinary trades that contributes to a positive community environment.

To support and assist the Director, Parks and Recreation to design, implement, and supervise best practices to organize, manage, program and fund all City parks. Responsible for supporting the Director, Parks and Recreation in the supervision and evaluation of individuals and projects within City parks and green spaces, recreational facilities, athletic fields, golf courses and all programmed recreational activities.

Essential Functions
  • Assists the Director in determining and formulating the best options for short term and long term fiscal and operating management of parks and recreation programs.
  • Assists the Director in the formulation, presentation and execution of the Parks & Recreation Department budget, establishment of departmental priorities and allocation of resources.
  • Oversees the personnel and provides management oversight for the Parks and Recreation Department as assigned by the Director, Parks and Recreation.
  • Ensures the appearance and quality of park amenities and equipment are in good repair and meet quality standards.
  • Develops park equipment replacement standards and monitors that these standards are met.
  • Assists enterprise level recreational facilities to improve marketing and revenue when possible.
  • Oversees special events personnel, processes and planning.
  • Assists with or develops recreational programming within City parks and other amenities.
  • Coaches and monitors Parks and Recreational personnel for opportunities for improvement in customer service approaches, technical skills and performance.
  • Oversees the aquatics parks for all City facilities and ensures they meet all required standards.
  • Develops policies and procedures for recreational facilities, maintenance and landscaping.
  • Assists the Director, Parks and Recreation in planning and coordinating a diversified, year-round parks and recreation program including the management of various fields, parks, and open spaces.
  • As assigned, represents the Director and interprets the Department to the City Manager, City Commission, and community based groups at various public forums, and elsewhere as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in sports management, recreation and parks administration or closely related field and course work.
  • Seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in parks in the field or elements of public municipal business or recreational facilities administration management, Three (3) years of which was in a supervisory capacity; or the equivalent in education, training, and experience, which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License is required.
  • Requires AFO/CPO, Bloodborne Pathogens, Lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications within six months of hire.
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional by NRPA, preferred

  • Ability to work flexible schedules with after-hours programs, evening events and weekend recreational programming.


Responsibility

Reports to Director of Parks & Recreation. Provides leadership, direction and guidance to staff which incumbent has management responsibility for.

Physical Requirements

This is office work, usually requiring limited physical exertion. However, the work requires occasional light physical activity, especially when touring or inspecting facilities for which the incumbent has management responsibility. In this context, some lifting, reaching, stooping, pulling, grasping, balancing, climbing, kneeling, standing, crouching or similar activity may be required. Stringent adherence to safety precautions is required in some facilities, on job sites or in other situations. Visual acuity is required, primarily for reviewing computer and written files and other documents, as well as reviewing the work of others. Incumbent is required to have sufficient hearing ability to perceive information at normal spoken levels.

Public Contact

Contacts are an essential component of this position. The incumbent interacts frequently with the City Commission, City officials, employees of other City and County departments, vendors, contractors, media, and members of the general public. Substantial diplomatic skill is required to deal credibly and effectively with public contacts from time to time to explain the operation and functioning of the City's programs and activities.
