Position Description
Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Provides safety, health, and environmental consultation to Lubbock campus stakeholders and manages related concerns.
  • Oversees a team within Safety Services that provides and supports operational functions and support to environmental protection, radiation protection, laboratory safety, fire and life safety, emergency preparedness, and safety education and training programs for the Lubbock campus; as well perform occasional occupational safety duties.
  • Plans, develops, implements and supports safety programs to meet regulatory, institutional requirements and goals.
  • Conducts safety program inspections, audits, and surveys; prepares corrective action and preventive measure reports.
  • Surveys research and clinical laboratories for compliance with federal, state, local, institutional laboratory safety rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintains data and records regarding laboratory surveys, equipment inspections, laboratory certifications, and laboratory worker credentialing.
  • Oversees chemical accountability and Hazardous Waste Disposal Program and the commercial hazardous chemical waste contractor performance.
  • Initiates reports and maintains records of hazardous waste materials generation and disposal.
  • Responds to spills of hazardous chemicals and materials. Provides supervision, consultation and materials needed to reduce, eliminate, control, and/or clean up spills of hazardous materials/chemicals.
  • Oversees indoor Air Quality (IAQ) program, responds to odor calls and IAQ issues as requested/necessary.
  • Oversees Fit testing program for assigned campuses with support and collaboration of Safety Service managers and staff.
  • Conducts operational inspections of chemical fume hoods, safety showers, and eyewash stations.
  • Investigates or supervises investigation of reported incidents or hazards.
  • Communicates with supervisor and other departmental and managerial personnel on problems, recommendations, solutions, and situations.
  • Oversees and documents safety cross-training with all other Safety Services divisions. Cross-training should include campus-specific training. Seek and document opportunities to cross-train with all other Safety Services divisions and campuses. Establish routine cross-training refresher training opportunities to reinforce retention of cross-training knowledge.
  • Oversees AED program for assigned campus and responds to issues as requested/necessary.
  • Execute safety culture initiatives as directed by the department.
  • Supports the TTUHSC Emergency Management Coordinator with development, implementation, training, and reviews local Emergency Management and Emergency Action Plans.
  • Supports Unit Safety Officer program as necessary to further develop a safety culture within the institution.
  • Adopts and demonstrates our TTUHSC Values-Based Culture.
  • Responsible for keeping personal Safety-related knowledge, skills, and abilities up-to-date and putting this into practice on the campus; continually updates professional knowledge in all safety related areas as needed.
  • Must have and maintain valid State of Texas Driver License and be listed as an approved driver as determined by the TTUS Office of Risk Management and institutional auto insurance carrier.


Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience
OR
a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.
