Job Description

THE POSITION

To perform entry level electronic, electro-mechanical, microprocessor control, and electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, street lighting, and parking revenue control equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level. Incumbents perform the less difficult work, and are considered to be in a training status. They receive direct supervision and are not expected to perform the full range of duties assigned to the journey level.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

General supervision is provided by the Traffic Control and Lighting Supervisor, and direct technical supervision may be provided by higher level Technicians.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Under supervision to learn to:

- Inspect street lighting, traffic signal controls, and auxiliary equipment; diagnose malfunctions; adjust and replace electronic, electrical, and mechanical components; relamp traffic signals and street lights.
- Repair, replace, or modify signal head components, controllers, relays, switches, fuses, timers, and cabinet parts.
- Perform street cut operations at designated signal locations.
- Set out barricades and traffic cones and re-route traffic as necessary for safe operations.
- Investigate complaints and reports of parking revenue control equipment malfunctions; adjust, repair, or remove defective equipment; make field repairs of damaged equipment.
- Diagnose and repair electronic, electro-mechanical, and microprocessor controlled parking control equipment; perform preventative maintenance and testing.
- Maintain schematic operations manuals, and problem and repair logs on related parking equipment.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Work is sometimes performed at heights and during bad weather.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

- Methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the repair of electronic, electrical, and mechanical devices.
- Principles of solid state electronics and high voltage electricity.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions required
in electrical and electronic work.

Ability to:

- Understand and interpret written and oral instructions.
- Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and electronic circuit diagrams.
- Prepare simple reports.
- Perform work at heights, and during bad weather conditions.
- Use and care for tools and equipment used in maintaining and repairing electronic, electrical, and mechanical devices.
- Work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary to resolve emergency problems.

Experience:

Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and solid state electronic computers or related equipment.

Education:

Specialized training in solid state electronics. One year of college level electronics training or equivalent military electronic training may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

Special Qualifications:

Driver License:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of appointment, and is a condition of continued employment. Loss of the Class C License is a cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Residency Requirement:

Employees in this classification must reside within thirty-five (35) air miles from the freeway interchange at W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year following appointment.

Probationary Period:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

2. Training and Experience Exam : (Weighted 100%) - The questions located at the end of the application are the Training and Experience (T&E) Exam. Responses to the T&E questions will be rated and scored. This exam will evaluate the relevance, level, and progression of a candidate's education, training and experience. The exam score will determine your ranking on the eligible list for this job. When completing the T&E questions, please note:

  • Responses to the T&E questions must be submitted online; paper questionnaires will not be accepted.


  • A resume will not substitute for the information required in the T&E questions.



3. Eligibility : Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. The hiring department may contact candidates for interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires one year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Traffic Control and Lighting Technician Trainee examination.

4. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review. The hiring department will select the most competitive applications for further consideration. Human Resources will only evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications, as stated on the job announcement, for applications selected by the hiring department.

5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
