Job Description and Duties

Under the close direction of a Special Agent field training officer, the Special Agent Trainee assists in conducting criminal investigations involving the enforcement of various state and federal statutes. The Special Agent Trainee will be assigned to a field training officer for the duration of their probationary period to receive comprehensive, on-the-job training in the application of the principles and techniques of investigation and enforcement activities. The incumbent may be assigned to and must be capable of providing assistance in initiating and conducting investigations in any of the Department's enforcement or investigation programs.

Occassional overtime and travel may be required.

  • Lateral transfer: Candidates who are currently employed by the State of California may be eligible to laterally transfer to the Special Agent Trainee classification. Transfer eligibility depends upon the applicant’s current classification.

Special Agent Trainees must successfully complete all academy courses, including academic classes, physical training, physical methods of arrest, vehicle operation, and use of weapons in order to be eligible to qualify to move to the class of Special Agent, Department of Justice. Failure in the Special Agent Trainee class to qualify for movement to the class of Special Agent within the prescribed training period will be cause for termination.
