Education and Experience : High School Diploma, GED, or higher and completion of the Success Through Technology Education (STTE) Foundation (6-week) training course and completion of the El Paso Water (EPW) Basic Water or Wastewater training course.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state by time of appointment. Class "D" Water or Wastewater Operators License issued by the State of Texas required within six (6) months of appointment.

Note - Upon successful completion of a six (6) month El Paso Water on-the-job training program, the trainee will be hired to a regular Utility Plant Technician position.

General Purpose

Under immediate supervision, this classification will serve as a training classification in the operation, maintenance and repair of water or wastewater treatment systems and equipment.

Typical Duties

Attend and successfully complete classroom sessions and field training to gain knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the Utility Plant Technician. Involves: Attend classroom training to learn how to monitor and control water and wastewater treatment processes and equipment. Learn the principles and practices of water and wastewater monitoring and control treatment processes. Learn to monitor laboratory tests of water or wastewater and ensure samples are taken and tested in accordance with Federal and State regulations. Assist in taking water or wastewater samples at various stages of processing.

Attend field training to learn the proper operation of gauges, meters, pumps, motors, chemical feeders, automatic control devices or other equipment. Involves: Learn the techniques to perform installation, preventative maintenance and repair of treatment systems and complex equipment. Learn to assist in repair of pumps, motors, aeration systems, chlorinators, chlorine dioxide generators, multiple chemical feeders, or similar mechanical equipment. Learn to inspect machinery for proper operation and to detect faulty parts. Learn the process to replace parts using hand tools. Learn how to perform minor electrical or mechanical repairs including basic welding. Learn to utilize computer databases to store sampling results, schedule, and record shift activity. Perform other job duties as assigned.
