Pay range for this position is $62,400 to $83,054 and is dependent on qualifications and experience.

The Landscape Architect II is responsible for planning and executing park and recreation improvement projects across the City of Olathe. Projects include park spaces, recreational areas, multi-use trails, urban public spaces, and other City-owned facilities. The role also oversees the management of park construction projects, trail development, and the enhancement of landscapes for new roadway medians and roundabouts, while maintaining awareness of progress, budget and designated time schedules for assigned projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manages design and construction projects, including new parks, park improvements, and city-wide trails, from concept through implementation, ensuring compliance with city standards and budgets; assists in the identification and prioritization of park improvement projects and prepares cost estimates to determine funding requirements.
  • Prepares detailed site plans, specifications and cost estimates, leading project coordination with city staff, stakeholders, consultants, and contractors in a collaborative manner.
  • Conducts thorough reviews of consultant’s design plans and project manual to ensure compliance with project goals, design standards, and regulatory requirements; identifies and addresses potential issues or discrepancies, providing feedback to the design team for corrections and improvements.
  • Compiles and analyzes datafor park sites, addressing existing conditions such as lighting, signage, drainage, maintenance, structural inspections, environmental reports, and landscape improvements.
  • Partners with the Park Project Manager on various park planning tasks, including presentations to stakeholders and City Council; collaborates with inspectors and Infrastructure maintenance & construction teams during construction, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and cooperates with contractors to resolve any deviations or deficiencies in the field.
  • Prepares conceptual renderings, graphics, and maps for presentations and informational materials, utilizing creative applications and ArcMap/GIS.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and assists developers and contractors with technical questions related to parks and trails.


Qualifications

Experience: At least three years of experience in design and management of landscape architecture and park projects and proficiency in AutoCAD and Bluebeam applications, ArcMap/GIS and MS Office programs is required. Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign is preferred.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A bachelor’s degree with major coursework in landscape architecture from an accredited college or university is preferred. Additional relevant experience such as knowledge of master planning processes, parks and trails planning, design and construction may be substituted for education.

Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record is required. Possession of or ability to obtain a Kansas Landscape Architect license is required within fifteen months of employment.

Environmental or Physical Demands: Work often requires spending much of the time working in the office. When working outdoors and conducting site visits, inspections, or overseeing construction projects, there may be extended periods of walking and standing on uneven surfaces, and sloped terrains. There may also be frequent exposure to various weather conditions, dust, pollen, insects, and other natural elements. Possible exposure to loud noises from construction sites or equipment used during site assessments and project implementation may be present.
