J ob Description Summary:

The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office is seeking a litigation p aralegal to provide a high leve l of strategic support, coordination, and communication for County Attorney staff, County clients and agencies, and elected officials. This position provides primary support to the County Attorney’s operations litigation team. Prior experience in a legal office providing litigation paralegal support such as drafting and filing pleadings, calendaring deadlines, review of discovery, and legal research is a plus for this position.

The ideal candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, excellent editing skills, be legal-minded, relentlessly detail-oriented, and a team player. The candidate must also have the proven ability to take initiative, move between diverse tasks with ease, and must thrive in a high-energy, collegial environment.

Schedule:

This position has the potential to operate on a four-day work week (Monday-Thursday) or a standard work week (Monday-Friday.) This position also offers the opportunity for hybrid work, with options for remote and in-office work.

Salary:

Anticipated Hire Range: $3 2 .00 - $35.00 USD

Compensation will be determined based on education, experience, and skills and Equal Work for Equal Pay Considerations.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs essential paralegal functions for attorneys in the County Attorney's office in practice in all courts. Areas of practice include complex civil litigation, employment law, civil rights, and zoning/land use litigation.


  • Prepares initial pleadings to include complaints, answers, motions, notices, and discovery requests and responses for attorney review .


  • Reviews, analyzes, and organizes (including Bates stamping) voluminous documents and discovery materials in complex civil litigation cases.


  • Maintains system for tracking filing and docket deadlines and other important dates.


  • Prepares exhibits and trial notebooks.


  • Acts as liaison with clients, other law firms, courts, and other agencies.


  • Electronically files court documents using PACER and the U.S. District Court ECF filing systems, and trains others in the use of such systems.


  • Performs research utilizing Westlaw and other internet and research services.


  • Monitors State and Federal litigation procedural rules and statutes and keeps County Attorney staff advised of updates and changes.


  • Develops specialized reports and demonstrative evidence exhibits such as timelines, wage calculation reports, and PowerPoint presentations.


  • Tracks litigation and potential litigation claims and prepares audit report and periodic report of litigation matters and claims.


  • Maintain case files, files and manages documents.


  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate s degree


  • M inimum of one year of experience as a litigation paralegal or litigation legal assistant in a law firm, corporate legal departments, or government agencies, or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education & experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three years of experience as a paralegal in a litigation legal department. Paralegal Certificate at hire or currently enrolled in a paralegal program to be completed within six months of date of hire.


Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Prior experience working in a law office or legal department.


  • Strong written and oral communication.


  • Independent critical thinking and analysis.


  • Strong problem-solving aptitude.


  • Computer skills, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office suite ( i.e.Word , Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint etc.) Adobe Acrobat Pro . Ability to read and interpret statutes and legislation.


  • Strong time management and prioritization skills.


  • Attention to detail and deadlines.
