The Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Agency is currently seeking staff for youth & adult sports, youth and teen programs, health & wellness programming, special events, aquatics, senior services programs, the nature center, and Santa Ana Zoo. All positions are part-time and incumbents may work up to 19 hours per week. Work hours and schedules vary according to program and participant needs. Successful candidates must be available to work shifts during various hours of the day, evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

Under general supervision:
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of recreation and educational activities including: seminars, special events, games, mini-excursions, competitive activities
  • Opens/closes PRCSA facilities for reservations taking place at Athletic, Recreation, Community or Senior Centers that take place throughout the City. (May be applicable to certain divisions only)
  • Sets up and tears down PRCSA facilities when required.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness of facilities and inventory of restroom facilities.
  • Conducts regular inspections and reports hazardous or unsafe conditions of PRCSA facilities and/or parks.
  • Monitors and enforces rules as outlined in the S.A.M.C., Facility Reservation Policy, Athletic Field Use Policies & Procedures, Special Event Permit Policy and Synthetic Field Rules & Regulations.
  • Writes detailed reports informing administration of any atypical behavior at PRCSA facilities.
  • Assist with promotion of programs
  • Conduct group transportation activities
  • Compile program/activity descriptions
  • Maintain inventory of materials and supplies
  • Solicit event sponsors
  • Contribute to the development of flyers and newsletters
  • Instruct staff and/or volunteers in the implementation of programs and activities
  • Monitor and evaluate daily activities and make recommendations for improvement and to contribute to life-enriching experiences
  • Refer staff, volunteers and participants to center coordinator for disciplinary action or recognition of achievements
  • Participate cooperatively in work team activities
  • Answer telephone and provide customer assistance over the telephone or in person.
  • Performs other tasks as required
If ass ig ned to Community Garden Program, duties may also include:
  • Composting, weeding, pruning, planting, watering plants
  • Garden general maintenance
  • Community building and leading workshops related to community garden tasks
  • Community health and nutritional awareness
If assigned to Athletics Reservation Programs, duties may also include:
  • Courteously and professionally interacts with residents, the general public, sports organizations, coaches, and sports participants at either City sports facilities (Dan Young Soccer Complex, SA Stadium, Willard Int. Sports Complex) or City parks, trails and recreation facilities to provide enhanced communication and services to the community, while focusing on preventing problems from occurring and promoting positive use of the named facilities or park system.
  • Collect and submit participant registration forms, rosters, attendance sheets, monthly statistical reports, driver reports, timesheets, purchase requests, and other program data or reports
If assigned to Zoo, duties may also include:
  • May work in animal interaction areas (goat yard, butterfly aviary, bird aviary)
  • Addresses emergency/accident issues related to patrons and facilities
  • Works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.


Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age and possess and retain a California Class "C" Driver's License as a condition of employment; e ducation and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; some experience planning and implementing activities and events, preferably in Recreation; ability to deal professionally with senior citizens and participants of all ages, including children; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable skills and abilities listed below.

DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of : public relations/customer service; PRCSA rules and regulations; personal computers, including current office software applications and Windows operating system.

Skills: basic use of computers, including Microsoft Word; operating a calculator, phone, and standard office equipment.

Ability to: establish and maintain an effective and respectful working relationship and communication approach with fellow team members, various groups and organizations, the general public, other public entities and PRCSA facility patrons; perform assignments without close supervision; work in a team environment; understand and communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; use correct grammar and spelling; use telephone, fax machine, copier and computers; be well-organized and pay attention to detail; exercise good judgment; work in a public setting; perform job duties with a high degree of accuracy; demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation and creativity in planning, organizing and directing the recreation program activities by providing leadership, instruction and training to participants; carry out directives from the Senior Program Leader. Recreation Specialist and/or Recreation Program Coordinator, take initiative, be proactive; attend staff meetings and trainings; multi-task and maintain organization in a fast-paced, changing environment; create and maintain confidentiality when dealing with proprietary information and sensitive situations.

Special Requirement: Must be able to lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 60 lbs.


Special Working Conditions: Must be willing and able to work during the shifts listed at the top of this bulletin which includes weekends, evenings and holidays, as a condition of employment.

Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Hmong, Korean, or Samoan is highly desirable.

Part-Time employees accrue paid sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every thirty (30) hours worked up to a maximum accrual of 6 days or 48 hours. Employees are eligible to use 3 days or 24 hours of accrued paid sick leave in a 12-month period.
