Current Assignment
This announcement will be used to establish a pool of eligible candidates for vacancies that may occur within the next twelve months.

The Shop Machinist position performs a wide range of skilled machining and fabrication work required for the repair and modification of District vehicles and equipment. This position also supports all BART departments as needed in support of special projects. This position is highly skilled and requires precision machining and metalworking using specialized equipment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills:

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine certification or experience preferred.
Experience with sheet metal fabrication preferred.
Experience with welding (Mig / Tig / Stick) preferred.
Ability to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments out of metal preferred.
Precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments are preferred.
Ability to fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines preferred.
Able to apply knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures preferred.

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. However, All SEIU members must follow the "Bid Form Process", failure to comply will invalidate an employee's application.

The selection process will include a screening for minimum qualifications as listed in this posting and may additionally involve a skills/performance test, written exam, and/or a panel interview. Outside applicants will not be considered until all employees who have applied have been considered first.

Examples of Duties

Performs skilled machining and metal working in the repair, modification, and fabrication of parts, accessories and equipment for District maintenance vehicles, locomotives, track liners, ballast regulators, high rails, armored trucks and relate.

Sets up, adjusts, and operates lathes, mills, band, reciprocal, sabre, and abrasive cut off saws, drill presses, hydraulic presses, power breaks, power rollers, grinders, punches, nibblers, and related tools.
Uses welding equipment to perform welding, brazing, soldering and cutting; performs mechanical disassembly and assembly to access broken welding equipment in the course of fabrication and repair/
Operates precision measuring devices such as height and depth gauges, calipers, micrometers, protractors, scales, and related; discusses work to be performed with supervisors, users, and engineers; reads and interprets diagrams, engineering drawings, manuals, schematics, and work orders.
Fabricates special jigs and fixtures to position or secure work; selects appropriate types and grades of metals for intended uses.
Observes safe working practices and uses appropriate protective devices and clothing; measures, tests and inspects completed work to confirm adherence to specifications and/or suitability of completed work for intended use.
Maintains records of materials used and work performed; operates District vehicles to reach disabled or remote stationary equipment to be repaired; requests supplies through supervisor or from stock.

Minimum Qualifications

A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills outlined:

Completion of an apprenticeship as a machinist or mill wright and one year of journey level experience in machining and metal working.

Other Requirements:

Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:
Use and care of power and hand tools and equipment used in machining and metal working; use and care of precision measuring equipment and devices; basic metallurgy as applied to the strength, ductility, and suitability of different metals for specific uses; mathematics used in laying out and measuring work; techniques of spray welding and surfacing; safe working practices.

Skill in:
Setting up, operating and adjusting hand and power tools and equipment used in machining and metal working; assembling and disassembling mechanical components; operating precision measuring devices; operating welding and brazing equipment; reading and interpreting engineering diagrams, schematics, manuals, and work orders; understanding and following oral and written instructions and work orders; maintaining records of materials used and work performed; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
