The Public Defender defends the rights and dignity of our clients, seeking equitable access to justice through holistic representation and the reunification of families and communities. The Public Defender's Office is currently recruiting for Early Representation Interviewers, who will serve a key function in the development of an Early Representation model of indigent defense. These positions will meet with arrestees in jail shortly after their booking to determine if the they have social service or treatment needs (e.g., transportation, housing, mental health or substance abuse, developmental disability or other cognitive impairments), obtain their emergency contact information and identify community ties, and prepare a report for the attorney, a Deputy Public Defender. The report will be used by the attorney for bail advocacy and to flag time-sensitive tasks necessary for a zealous defense. Additionally, the position will gather, read, and review all available discovery; compile statistical information; and update the client case management system.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Assignment : Must be willing to visit clients in their home, jails, prisons, state hospitals and other settings and accept assignment as needed in San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga, or Victorville based on department needs.

Travel : Travel throughout the County is required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced by the individual providing the transportation and maintained during employment.

Pre-Employment Process : Applicants must pass a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting, and/or medical exam, prior to appointment.

Shift work and/or weekend work : May require shift work and/or weekend work. Must indicate availability on the application. Shift differentials and overtime compensation are available as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding .

Minimum Requirements

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years full-time experience performing complex clerical tasks in an office environment. Experience must be comparable to duties performed by a clerical lead worker and/or supervisor, fiscal assistant, or other office work which is non-routine in nature and requires exercising independent decision making.

Experience must be clearly described on the application and must include performing a variety of clerical tasks including public contact and computer usage.

Qualifying experience is typically equivalent to the San Bernardino County Office Assistant III classification and above.

Note: Retail sales and food service experience is not qualifying.

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications : The ideal candidate will have experience working with indigent clients in challenging situations, have strong verbal communication skills, and the ability to write clearly and succinctly.
