Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communications Center is looking for an IT Technician I (Computer Support Specialist) passionate about public safety to provide customer support to for hardware and software systems related to administrative and 9-1-1 services.

HIRING PAY RATE: $27.17- $35.58 PER HOUR

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Install, configure and maintain client and server hardware and software in a mixed Windows & Linux environment including desktops, servers, printers, VoIP systems, IP network systems, communications equipment and maintain hardware peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse) to ensure user functionality.
  • Respond to and troubleshoot hardware and software issues in person, remotely and over the telephone, which may include soliciting product vendors, service providers and contractors for technical support.
  • Ensure security and privacy of networks and computer systems by regularly applying security patches and updates while minimizing system downtime and loss of user functionality while maintaining confidentiality of information.
  • Provide orientation, training and guidance to users on how to operate new software and computer equipment. Develop new training material as systems change.
  • Maintain and review logs of system changes, network activity, user activity, threat and security alerts. Manage hardware asset tracking to ensure accountability. Assist with managing domain configuration and group policies to maintain compliance.
  • Assist Supervisor and Manager in developing and updating Technical Operating Procedures documents.
  • Attend all applicable and mandatory training to meet Federal and State regulations.
  • This is an essential position and required to participate in departmental activations.
  • Perform other duties as required or assume other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Non-Negotiables:

Must have a positive attitude, proven leadership experience, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate well to a diverse group of people.
  • Must have a High School Diploma, or the equivalent, with at least five years of experience providing computer science or information technology technical support services, preferably in a public safety environment. An Associate or Bachelor's degree in a related field may be substituted for work experience or any equivalent combination of experience, training, and education which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work..
  • CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+ or similar certifications preferred.
  • Be able to successfully complete Level IV CJIS Security Awareness Training within 6 months of date of hire, and maintain the certification.? Must have no felony convictions; misdemeanors will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and disposition information must be provided.
  • Pass a background investigation including driving record, employment history, employment, education, and training verification, illegal conduct (drug use, etc.), reference check, and background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and psychological evaluation.

Must maintain a current NCIC certification or obtain NCIC certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, County Council, County employees, vendors, and other agencies.
  • Be able to successfully obtain CJIS certification within 6 months of date of hire and maintain the certification throughout employment.
  • Must have no felony convictions; misdemeanors will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and disposition information must be provided.
  • Pass a background investigation including driving record, employment history, employment, education, and training verification, illegal conduct (drug use, etc.), reference check, and polygraph examination.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and psychological evaluation.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions include:
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time while working on computers, troubleshooting or monitoring systems.
  • Frequent use of hands or fingers to handle, operate, and repair small and intricate equipment like servers, cables, and networking tools.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and heavy technology hardware which may involve lifting weights over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in small spaces requiring bending, kneeling, or crouching to access equipment or cables.
  • May be required to climb ladders or scaffolding to install or maintain equipment.
  • Ability to work days, nights, weekends, and during emergencies.
  • Work is performed in a secure office building with regulated light and temperature. Occasionally work will be performed in confined spaces.
  • Standard work hours will be Monday through Friday for an eight-hour period that may include days, evenings, overnights, and weekends as required.
