    Description

    The School of Art and Design in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts at San Diego State University invites applications for a full-time faculty position as a tenure-track Assistant Professor or an Associate Professor with tenure within its Interior Architecture program, effective Fall 2025. We welcome candidates with a background in interior architecture or related fields with preferred specializations in interdisciplinary research and practice that positively impact contemporary societal, cultural, and environmental issues. Examples of research areas include but are not limited to adaptive reuse, cross-border innovation, bio-inspired sustainable design, computational design and fabrication, human-centered design, multisensory interactive environments, responsive materials, robotic construction, and social and climate justice.

    Applicants must hold a terminal degree in interior architecture, architecture, or related design fields from an accredited professional program by the beginning of employment. The successful candidate will teach interior architecture studio, lecture, and seminar courses in their area(s) of specialization. The candidate also will mentor students, teach students emerging technologies and skills, direct student research, and collaborate on development of the curriculum for a future architectural design program. The candidate is expected to develop a rigorous research agenda that advances the University’s focus on community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration.

    The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant or Associate Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range for an assistant professor is from $$77,000-$80,000, and for an associate is $105,000-$108,000.. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.     Additionally, the candidate will partner with faculty from across the School to develop a vision for the curriculum that enhances its status as a center of research in the fields of architecture and interior design. The candidate is expected to participate in program accreditation and serve on academic committees at the School, the College, and the University levels, as well as to engage in professional organizations and conduct outreach to industry.

    Position Responsibilities:

    Faculty responsibilities typically include a 3-3 teaching load. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in interior architecture, provide architecture and design and technological expertise and critical insight, and direct advanced undergraduate and graduate student research. The candidate will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student success. The candidate is expected to pursue a rigorous interior architecture and design research, scholarship, or creative production agenda. The candidate will collaborate and coordinate with part-time instructors and develop a curriculum with area faculty for our high-impact research-based design programs at the border region.

    Faculty represent the School of Art and Design at community events, participate in service-oriented activities within the university and the community, and remain active in the profession and appropriate professional organizations. Every faculty member is expected to assume a fair share of responsibility for non-classroom activities to enhance the collegiality and effectiveness of the School, College, and University, and to promote the stature of SDSU in the community.

    About the School of Art and Design:

    The School of Art and Design in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) is a creative learning community in which students develop their practice as artists, designers, and art historians who work in and across media while enhancing their visual, material, and conceptual thinking. Located on the Pacific Rim and near the border with Mexico, the School is dedicated to the integration of art, design, and community building in alignment with the School’s commitments to social/environmental justice and innovative entrepreneurship. Through both discipline-specific and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, we support students to innovate solutions, express ideas, imagine possibilities, and interpret the world through historical, cultural, and global contexts.

    In addition to 16 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, the school employs approximately 69 lecturers and graduate teaching associates to serve approximately 1,000 majors and 20 graduate students. The Director leads the School with the support of seven full-time staff positions and one part-time Instructional Support Technician position. The full-time positions include two Equipment Technicians, one Administrative Analyst/Specialist, three Administrative Support Coordinators, and one Information Technology Consultant.     Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    • Terminal degree in Interior Architecture (M.I.Arch, or PhD), Architecture (M.Arch, or PhD), Art and Design (MFA, MS, or PhD), or related field (MFA, MS, or PhD)

    • Significant interior architecture and design research agenda evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, conference participation, visionary practice, built œuvre, exhibitions, and/or other forms of scholarly output

    • Professional or scholarly experience with interdisciplinary collaboration

    • At least two (2) years of interior architecture and/or design studio teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels as instructor of record

    • Evidence of commitment to student-centered, interdisciplinary, and collaborative teaching and learning

    • Demonstrated record of, and/or commitment to, teaching and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds and members of underrepresented groups in developing their design and critical thinking skills

    • Qualified to teach undergraduate- and graduate-level interior architecture and design studio courses with emergent technologies, such as industry standard software, material innovation, digital fabrication, computational design, and Building Information Management

    • Ability to contribute to service responsibilities at the School, College, University and community levels

    • Manifested qualities of professionalism, collegiality, and inclusivity

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience of professional industry practice

    • Experience with curriculum development through innovative teaching

    • Demonstrated experience integrating emergent technologies, such as immersive environment, interactive design, artificial intelligence, and robotics, in teaching of design courses

    • Evidence of leadership experience

    • Experience with Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) or National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation process
