  The Position
  
  Highway Construction Aids work under close supervision and perform unskilled tasks associated with highway maintenance, construction, testing labs and equipment shops. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
  
  These positions are located in CARSON CITY and are used to maintain Nevada roads during the winter season. Crews include: construction, maintenance, debris clean up, bridge, night sweeping, landscaping, lighting and striping. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. Incumbent assists in routine maintenance duties, including keeping pavement surface, shoulders, clear zones and associated roadways in good repair and assistance in emergency operations. The hours for these positions are subject to change depending on the needs of the appointing authority and may be five 8-hour shifts or four 10-hour shifts.   In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
  Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform physical tasks requiring moderate strength. Special Notes If underfilling, one year of experience as a Highway Construction Aid in Nevada State service may provide for progression to Highway Maintenance Worker I upon meeting the minimum qualifications, with satisfactory performance and with the approval of the appointing authority. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. In addition, federal law requires random testing for controlled substances during employment. These positions require an applicant be at least 18 years of age upon application. If selected, proof of being at least 18 years of age will be required. This announcement is for temporary (maximum of six months) positions only. Applicant must indicate that they are willing to accept temporary work in order to be considered. This position may require working alternate shifts and outside of traditional business hours. The hours of this position are subject to change based on the needs of the appointing authority. Typical shifts are four 10-hour or five 8-hour shifts, but may include some variation depending on the specific needs of the department. Tell us how you heard about us!   The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

  European explorers traveled through Nevada in the early 19th century, but it was not until 1851 that the first settlements were established. An Act of Congress created the Territory of Nevada on March 2, 1861. James W. Nye of New York was appointed Nevada's first Territorial Governor by President Abraham Lincoln later that year. On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

  Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
