Job Description

What You'll Be Doing

The Community Testing Counselor works screening for HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Hepatitis C. It provides testing services for those individuals at community sites as well as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) education and client-centered risk reduction counseling. Work environment includes community settings, evening scheduling, and nominal degree of risk in community outreach events with monthly weekend activities.

Job duties for this position include:
  • Collecting blood and urine specimens and preparing all requisition forms according to lab protocol
  • Entering and ordering tests of specimens collected through the Electronic Medicaid Record (EMR) System, Athena
  • Collecting client information including registration, risk behavior, and demographics
  • Providing pre and post-testing counseling and education for HIV/STD/Hep C and PrEP
  • Have a CMA certification or willingness to obtain one in 90 days after hire

**Candidate will need to have a valid NC license and car

NOTE: (i) If you work in the Health Clinics and Public Health Division, influenza immunization is a condition of initial and continued employment, subject to compliance with federal law, (ii) actively supports and participates in department emergency preparedness and response activities, which may include temporary changes in responsibilities and working hours.

In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • Bachelor's degree
  • No specific experience required
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • NC Whetstone Training
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Experience providing health education related to sexuality, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Experience working with individuals engaged in high risk behaviors
  • Spanish language skills preferred


How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Must be highly comfortable and non-judgmental with the ability to have open discussions with anyone, including incarcerated individuals and others who engage in high risk behaviors
  • Ability to order lab tests through the EMR system, Athena
  • NC Whetstone Training completed or completed within 3 months of hire
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy or willingness to be trained
