Job Description

Job Summary:

Under the lead work direction of the Pharmacist II and direction of the Executive Director, the Pharmacist I performs the full range of general licensed pharmacist duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform full range of professional pharmacist duties
  • Consult with the prescribers, nursing staff, and patients
  • Identifies, evaluates, and interprets prescriptions
  • Dispenses medications, vaccines, and other therapeutic agents
  • Ensures pharmacy programs, operations, and inventories are in compliance with established professional standards and applicable federal and state regulations
  • Administers vaccines and related anaphylaxis medications as needed
  • Furnishes self-administered hormonal contraception per California state protocol
  • Dispenses emergency contraction per California state protocol
  • Dispenses medical abortion medications per California state protocol
  • Dispenses HIV PrEP/PEP medications per California state protocol
  • Maintains pharmacy security and patient confidentiality
  • Participates in planned and unplanned state and/or federal inspections
  • Responsible for maintaining controlled and non-controlled drug inventory
  • Under general supervision and as part of ensuring compliance with established professional standards and applicable federal and state regulations, check for and ensure the proper handling of expired, damaged, recalled, hazardous, and non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste
  • Acquire, receive, and maintain pharmaceuticals and supplies, including but not limited to placing orders for medications, vaccines, and other pharmacy or clinic items from designated wholesalers or vendors
  • Under the general supervision of the Pharmacist II, may assist with various aspects of pharmacy administration, including responsibility for accounting and fiscal procedures and maintaining accurate and readily-retrievable accounting records
  • Handles cash and debit card transactions
  • Maintains adequate change in the cash drawer
  • Handles refund request
  • May participate in quarterly audits
  • Processes daily transaction reports
  • Interprets providers’ order
  • Acquire, receive, and maintain pharmaceuticals and supplies
  • Ensures that the records of those items received, on hand or dispensed are accurate and retrievable
  • Assists with pharmacy quality assurance and quality improvement studies
  • Assists with pharmacy self-assessments, annual drug inventory, annual narcotic inventory, patient satisfaction surveys
  • May process and fill prescriptions covered by insurance via online billing and reconciling billing in pharmacy computer systems
  • Participates in the development and implementation of pharmacy policies.
  • Assigned administrative responsibilities as needed including serving as Interim Pharmacist-In-Charge
  • Keep current with developments in the pharmaceutical field and in areas affecting pharmacy operations; ensures compliance with all state and federal laws pertaining to pharmacy practice
  • Updates the providers on new regulations and statutes
  • Ensures all pharmacists and pharmacy staff members comply with California Business and Professional codes
  • Engages in professional development activities; completes all department and university required trainings as assigned; performs other related duties supporting the Student Health Center (SHC) operations
  • May occasionally work on the Palm Desert Campus

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) college of pharmacy program or other program recognized by the board as defined by the California State Board of Pharmacy. Equivalent to one year of experience as a licensed pharmacist working independently.

Required Qualifications
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to dispensing, storage, and recordkeeping of drugs, narcotics and poisons.
  • Thorough knowledge of all drugs, chemicals and supplies required in the operation of the Student Health Center pharmacy.
  • Working knowledge of automated pharmacy systems; and campus procurement and budgetary processes.
  • General knowledge of pharmacy administration and the requirements of serving as a Pharmacist-in-Charge.
  • Ability to compound and fill prescriptions; evaluate written prescription orders to determine ingredients needed and ensure proper dosages; review patient profiles against prescriptions for potential drug interactions and allergies; serve as a resource to practitioners and other medical support staff in the areas of pharmacology, drug combination, drug interaction, and alternative drug therapies; participate in the development and implementation of pharmacy policies, procedures and protocols; prepare and maintain accurate records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff and management; be sensitive to, communicate effectively with, and provide support to diverse patients; and provide lead work direction to pharmacy support staff.

  • American Pharmacy Association’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Certificate
  • California Pharmacist Contraception Services Training Program Certificate
  • Medication Therapy Management Services Certificate
  • HIV PrEP/PEP Certificate
  • Current BLS CPR Certification
  • Experience in a college health service or with adolescent or young adult age groups
  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Effective oral, written and nonverbal communication skills
  • Customer/Client Focus with an emphasis on problem solving and resolution
  • Personal effectiveness and credibility as demonstrated by interpersonal and professional confidence
  • Ability to serve a diverse student population and campus community

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $65.96 - $67.94 per hour

Classification Salary Range: $27.39 - $100.10 per hour

The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year. Background Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Mandated Reporter

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Campus Security Authority

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
