(Job #538079) Performing Arts Technician I, Events Technician - Pool, Salary Range: $21.95 - $39.71 hourly. Hiring Range $21.95 -$24.00 hourly. This is a temporary, intermittent hourly, non-benefitted, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan position in the Cal Poly Humboldt Presents Department.

Position Summary: Under general supervision of the Gutswurrak Student Activities Center (SAC) Associate Director and lead direction from the SAC Operations Coordinator, the Events Technician provides overall technical support of Gutswurrak Student Activities Center and Cal Poly Humboldt Presents event operations, including providing sound and lighting functions, facility set-up assistance, and other event production requirements. This recruitment is for a pool to be used to fill temporary vacancies throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

85% - Provide overall technical support of SAC, Cal Poly Humboldt Presents, and large-scale university event operations.
  • Set up and operate sound, lighting, and AV equipment as required.
  • Assist with load-in and load-out of staging materials.
  • Train student assistants in AV, sound, crowd control, and lighting operations as needed.
  • Coordinate and assist with facility and/or event set-up as required.
  • Provide lead direction to student employees working in the position area.
  • Follow building opening and closing protocols as required.

10% - Serve as designated lead for student union operations for shifts as needed.
  • Resolve customer services issues or refer issues to appropriate staff.
  • Ensure student union policies and procedures are maintained.
  • Back up for coordination of on-site ticket sales operations

5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:
  • General knowledge of methods and problems related to sound, lighting, and staging production areas.
  • Working knowledge of lighting and sound equipment operations.
  • Working knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to facility set up, AV, and stage operations.
  • A foundation knowledge of applicable software packages for applicable production specialty and ability to use standard features.
  • Ability to assist in the training and supervision of students involved in operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively diverse population including students, staff, faculty and general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and those contacted in the course of business.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret various policies and procedures and to effectively use information pertaining to operations.
  • Skill in following written and verbal instruction.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends, according to event requirements.


Minimum Qualifications:
Requires one to two years of experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty such as stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audio production. This background normally would be achieved through professional training or applicable college coursework and practical experience. Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:
One (1) year of the required experience in a university, or college production environment.
