    The Position

    Positions in this series manage, supervise and participate in wildland fire suppression; fire prevention and education; presuppression; equipment and facility maintenance; and forestry and fire law enforcement. Assist the Forestry Program Manager - Fire to ensure that the components of the divisions Wildland Fire Protection Program are managed and operated in an efficient, accurate and safe manner consistent with federal, State, and division regulations, policies and procedures.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

    This position is located at Indian Springs/Three Lakes Valley. Duties of a Firefighter II in the Wildland Fire Protection Program include fire suppression, preparedness, prevention, public education, fuels management, defensible space, facilities and equipment maintenance, and forestry and fire law enforcement. Incumbents will respond to wildland fires and implement fuel management projects. Firefighter II's will supervise lower-level employees in fire and fuel management activities. May be responsible for the daily operations of heavy equipment to include Wildland Fire Engines and Dozers. Incumbents must be qualified as an NWCG Firefighter I (or higher) and a Single Resource Boss Trainee at time of application and must maintain these qualifications for the duration of employment. To verify these eligibility requirements for the position, a copy of your Red Card, or equivalent, must be attached to application at time of submittal. Incumbent shall initiate and complete an Engine Operator within 1 year. Incumbents must pass a work capacity test at the arduous level prior to appointment and for continued employment. The test consists of a 3 mile walk, carrying a 45 pound pack, in less than 45 minutes.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of firefighting experience; OR two years of experience as a Firefighter I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Some positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a Nevada commercial driver's license with endorsements as specified by the agency. Special Requirements Applicants may be required to pass a thorough medical examination and physical agility test prior to appointment and for continuing employment. Positions in this series are required to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Incumbents must obtain additional certifications, as identified by the agency, within specific timeframes identified by the agency, and must maintain those certifications as a condition of continuing employment. All positions in this series must have certifications as identified by the agency at the time of application. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this series have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
