    PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITIONIST II

    $5,559 - $7,592 per Month

    Summary of Position
    The Health Department’s Public Health (PH) Bureau is seeking to fill a fulltime Public Health Nutritionist II (PHN II) position in the Nutrition Case Management (NCM) program.

    The Nutrition Case Management program in the Monterey County Health Department Public Health Bureau, provides support to clients and their families who have weight management, chronic disease, and related dietary concerns. As Registered Dieticians, the Public Health Nutritionists II assess clients’ nutritional concerns and needs, and work with their clients to set their personal health goals related to nutrition through home visitation and/or telehealth appointments. Services focus on Medi-Cal clients across the age span but prioritize children. Assistance is given on management of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and gestational diabetes management; as well as obesity, dyslipidemia and altered eating patterns related to social, environmental, and behavioral factors. Additionally, participants in the program are referred to resources including but not limited to food, dental, activity, housing, emotional and social support that may be needed.

    As of September 8, 2023, Health Department may offer up to $10,000 signing bonus to candidates hired into regular full-time positions for this classification from this recruitment hired after September 8, 2023. Exam Plan 24/50L22/07PH.

    The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide.

    Examples of Duties

    • Prepares and conducts education programs in nutrition, health and consumerism for professional and paraprofessional staff. Assists in preparing and evaluating teaching aids and materials; speaks before community groups regarding nutrition programs and services.
    • Designs meal plans to meet individual dietary requirements of clients. Provides individual therapeutic diet counseling and conducts group sessions for clients and/or their families.
    • Keeps informed on recent nutrition research and relevant health issues; attends meetings and/or conferences.
    • Provides consultation to physicians, public health nurses and other health agency personnel regarding nutritional requirements for individuals and the general public health.
    • Conducts studies and surveys dealing with nutritional issues important to program operation.
    • Maintains a variety of records; prepares reports and correspondence.

    Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Working knowledge of:
    • The principles and practices of human nutrition and their relationship to health and disease.
    • Social, cultural and economic problems of individuals and families as they apply to public health nutrition.
    • Counseling techniques related to the field of public health and nutrition.
    • Educational principles and methods as applied to public health and nutrition.
    Skills and Ability to:
    • Gather, analyze and interpret nutritional information.
    • Effective communication skills to clearly present nutrition information to individuals and groups.
    • Prepare clear and concise reports and correspondence.
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted through the course of work.


    Examples of Experience/Education/Training

    Any combination of training, education, and/or experience which provides for the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

    Education: Completion of all course work leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Foods and Nutrition
    AND
    Experience: One year of experience in a community public nutrition program with a public or private agency.

    OR OPTION II

    Experience: One year of experience in a class comparable to Public Health Nutritionist I in Monterey County providing a variety of nutrition services to the community.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Possess a valid and current Registered Dietician certificate.
    • Some positions may require a bachelors degree in Foods and Nutrition, registration as a Dietitian in California or registration eligible, and one year of experience in a public health nutrition.
    • Some positions may require the ability to speak and/or read/write Spanish.
    • Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.
    • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency.
    • Successfully complete a background check to include fingerprinting.
