    The Position

    Correctional Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients in a correctional setting.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff, or they coordinate and provide statewide health-related training programs.

    This position is located in High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, NV. The Correctional Nurse 3 position involves several critical responsibilities. Key duties include patient assessment, treatment coordination, medication management, and emergency support. This entail identifying patient healthcare needs, developing and evaluating nursing care plans, conducting sick calls, and administering medications. The role also requires performing physical assessments, assisting with examinations, and providing emergency medical treatment. Additional responsibilities include maintaining hygiene, patient charting, and ensuring safety. The nurse must document progress notes, review charts, prepare reports, and comply with regulatory standards. Observing safety practices, adhering to OSHA guidelines, and ensuring the safety of patient care equipment are essential. Professionalism, strong work ethic, customer service, communication skills, and proficiency with necessary computer programs are also critical components of the role. The nurse supervises staff, ensuring infection control procedures and training compliance. These duties must be performed in accordance with the NV State Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act, departmental regulations, policies, and procedures.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) License as a Registered Nurse and three years of professional nursing experience in a correctional or institutional setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience. Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of employment. Probationary employees must successfully complete "pre-service" training (PST) provided by the department. As a condition of appointment and continuing employment, positions are subject to call-back, overtime on short notice, stand-by status, and must work various hours and/or shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Special Requirements A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.
