Job Description

From Granada Hills nestled into the Santa Susana Mountains on the north, to the port communities of San Pedro and Wilmington on the south, and from the bluffs of Pacific Palisades overlooking the blue of the ocean on the west, to the birthplace of the City at El Pueblo on the east, Los Angeles is the world’s most diverse city. With over four million residents, covering 469 square miles, Los Angeles is a mix of diverse people, changing terrain, and urban and economic opportunity. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in the world and has been recognized nationally for its long history of considerable experience and dedication to professional policing.  With an annual budget of approximately $1.189 billion, the Department consists of approximately 12,000 women and men who are responsible for the well-being and security of more than four million Angelenos. The City of Los Angeles is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and community-oriented leader to serve as the next Chief of Police. The ideal candidate will be an experienced executive and an inspirational and visionary leader who will inspire confidence and trust from the community, as well as earn the respect of both sworn and civilian employees.  The successful candidate will understand, respect, and welcome civilian oversight by the Board of Police Commissioners.  The next Chief must embrace and respect the rich diversity of Los Angeles and the LAPD workforce, and must be an approachable and transparent leader with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, expecting the same of his/her command staff.

Qualified candidates will possess at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including senior executive assignments and management of community policing efforts, preferably with a large metropolitan police agency.  Qualified candidates must have a proven and demonstrated track record of working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community. Experience working and cooperating with strong, independent forms of civilian oversight is preferred. A Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably augmented by postgraduate studies. Candidates must be a certified peace officer or have the ability to obtain certification as required by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Although not required, candidates committed to residing in the City of Los Angeles while serving as the Chief is preferred.

The current annual salary range for the Chief of Police is $392,774 to $487,986. It is anticipated that the salary range starting on July 1, 2024 will be: $408,475 to $507,509 The City also offers a highly competitive benefits package.
