Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

As a Firefighter/Paramedic, you will:
  • Respond to fire, medical, and other emergency calls for assistance.
  • Extinguish fires and conduct search and rescue operations.
  • Operate fire and rescue vehicles, equipment, and pumps.
  • Assess medical needs, provide basic emergency medical care, and transport patients to the hospital.
  • Check assigned apparatus for medical supplies and equipment and clean and disinfect vehicle and equipment.
  • Perform operator-level inspection, servicing, fueling, and maintenance of assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Conduct inspections of commercial/residential/industrial facilities for fire hazards and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare routine, periodic, special reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform general housekeeping of the fire station and surrounding grounds.
  • Conduct community education programs for fire prevention, safety, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Attend educational and physical training sessions.
  • Provide public assistance and perform special duties as required.


IDEAL CANDIDATE

Possess the knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of fire prevention and emergency response activities.
  • Relevant Federal/State/County/City codes, laws, and regulations related to fire/emergency protection and response and emergency medical services.
  • Emergency medical care and hazardous materials handling and cleanup.
  • Principles and practices of leadership.
  • Principles and practices of building construction.
  • Street names, topography, location, access, and hydrant locations.
  • Operation of fire engine, pumps, aerial ladders and fire equipment.
  • Computers and specialized hardware and software for preparing reports and maintaining records.

Has the ability to:
  • Think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies, and under stressful situations.
  • Manage emergency situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interacting with the public.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED:
  • Residency in the United States and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis
  • Depending upon the needs of the City, some incumbents of the class may be required to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule.
Educations, Training and Experience:
  • A high school Diploma or GED equivalent
Licenses and Certificates: must be maintained throughout employment.
  • A valid Arizona driver’s license and submit a 39-month MVD record.
  • Firefighter I & II by the State of Arizona AND/OR
  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) OR
  • Certified Emergency Paramedic
DESIRED/PREFERRED:
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • San Luis residency.

MEDICAL/ DENTAL/ VISION INSURANCE
- The City of San Luis is proud to provide medical, dental and vision insurance for it's employees which is administered by EBSO. Dependent premiums are paid one month in advance and are pre-taxed. Additional information regarding medical, dental and vision benefits may be requested from the Human Resources Department.

PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL RETIREMENTSYSTEM (PSPRS) - City employees are required to enroll in the Arizona State Retirement System.

FICA (Social Security Tax) - Employee Contribution - 6.20%
Medicare - Employee Contribution - 1.4500%.

PAID TIME OFF (PTO) -

Vacation Leave Accruals (Based on years of service and accrued on bi-weekly basis for 28 day work period)
Less than 6 years - 4.08 hrs. 6 - 11 years - 6.12 hrs. 11 years or more - 8.15 hrs. Sick Leave -4.89 hrs.

LIFE INSURANCE - The City provides eligible employees with a Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit. This plan is administered by Standard.

Basic Life Benefit - 1x Salary up to $50,000.00
AD&D Benefit - 1x Salary up to $50,000.00


DISABILITY INSURANCE - Disability insurance is available to all employees who work 30 or more hours per week.

Short-Term Disability - Coverage begins on the 15th day of injury or sickness.
Duration of Benefits - 180 days
Benefits Percentage- 66.67%
Waiting Period - 14 days
Maximum Weekly Benefit: $2,000.00

Long-Term Disability - (Public Safety Employees Only) Coverage begins on the 181st day for injury or sickness.
Duration of Benefits- To age 65
Benefits Percentage- 60%
Waiting Period- 180 days
Maximum Monthly Benefit- $10,000.00

WORKER'S COMP - Insurance coverage for medical expenses and loss of income due to an on-the-job injury is provided by the City of San Luis for all employees.

Employee Assistant Program (EAP) - Counseling for you and your dependents administered by Horizon Health. Up to 6 sessions per incident. No co-payment.
