Emergency Vehicle Technican
Department of Fire Rescue
Full-Time, 12 Months
Non-exempt, Paygrade 28

Job Summary/ Objective:

Under general direction performs inspections, preventative maintenance, repairs, and operational checks on the Fire Rescue fleet. Fleet consist of volunteer and career heavy apparatus (aerials, engines, tankers, squads and specialty units), medium apparatus (brush trucks and ambulances), and light apparatus (command and utility units). Performs work at County Logistics Facility and/or at remote sites at various stations and/or from a mobile platform. Work involves operation of both County and Volunteer emergency equipment, with responsibilities to include maintaining and performing repairs and annual inspections of all associated fire and EMS apparatus and equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides direct support to Fire Rescue Fleet Manager, Logistics Battalion Chief, and Deputy Chief of Operations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight, policy, and procedure.
  • Operates Fire and EMS heavy, medium, and light duty apparatus.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs that meet or exceed NFPA standards and/or manufacturer recommendations on Fire Rescue apparatus as directed by Fleet Manager or Logistics Battalion Chief
  • Performs annual inspections/testing (EVT II) per NFPA standards including the following areas: chassis, driving and crew compartment, and body, water pumping systems and water tanks, aerial devices, foam systems, compressed air foam systems, line voltage and low voltage electrical systems, breathing air systems.
  • Performs annual inspections/testing per NFPA 1932 Ground Ladders (EVT II)
  • Performs Virginia State Inspections (EVT II)
  • Works closely with outside vendors to secure parts and/or information regarding repairs.

Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:
  • Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the principles of fire/EMS vehicle design, operation, maintenance, and repairs (includes all types of fire/EMS apparatus).
  • Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, automatic and manual transmissions, steering and suspensions systems, hydraulic and air brake systems, electrical systems, heating and cooling systems, on-board computer systems, fire pumps, aerial ladders.
  • Must possess skills in troubleshooting and diagnosing systems listed above as well as computer skills required for data entry and report writing.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteer and career personnel, vendors, and the public.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, and work independently.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A minimum of two years' experience performing maintenance and repairs on light, medium, and/or heavy vehicles required.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified or equivalent preferred.
  • ASE test A-4 Auto Suspension and Steering, A-5 Auto Brakes, T-4 Truck Brakes, T-5 Truck Suspension & Steering required within one year.
  • EVT test F-1 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus, F-2 Design & Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus, E-0 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Ambulances, and E-1 Design & Performance of Ambulances required within two years.
  • Must complete OSHA forklift operator certification within one year.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Virginia Commercial Driver’s License preferred but required within one year.
  • Additional factory/manufacturer training may be required on an as needed basis.
  • Must maintain all required certifications and licenses.


Preferred Qualifications/Certifications:
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician I & II specific qualifications/certifications
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications preferred.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certifications preferred.
  • Virginia State Inspection License preferred.
  • OSHA forklift operator certification preferred.
  • Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License preferred.


Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach and stretch with hands and arms with a full range of motion.
  • Work is typically performed in an open bay at a County facility (fire station/logistics facility).
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles is necessary.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting at least 100 lbs occasionally and 75 lbs frequently.
  • Certain work conditions may require the use of safety glasses and leather steel toe shoes meeting OSHA guidelines.
  • Frequent contact with volunteer and career fire rescue personnel and outside vendors.
  • Regular work in outside weather conditions.
  • Occasional work near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces.
  • Occasionally exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration.
  • Often exposure to extremely high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
  • The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during operation of certain apparatus and equipment when noise levels may be loud.
  • The position is considered an essential position.
  • Regular interaction with various outside vendors.
  • Must successfully pass drug screening and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical prior to employment.


Remote Work:

This position is not eligible for remote work. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Salary Range:

The hiring range for this position is $23.13 - $25.56 per hour (approx. $48,105 - $53,168 per year). Starting offer is based on applicable education beyond minimum requirements and internal equity. The position also provides excellent benefits including 12 paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance options with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance, VRS retirement, and continuing education/training opportunities. This is a full-time, FLSA non-exempt position. Internal candidates will receive pay adjustments in accordance with Local Government Personnel Policy, §P-60.
