The Position

Staff Associate Engineers perform professional engineering assignments not requiring licensure by the State Board of Professional Engineers & Land Surveyors.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. This position assists the exploration, development, and certification of material sites for statewide highway construction and maintenance projects. Duties include reading and creating geologic maps; GPS locating of natural, geologic, and cultural features; collecting geological samples; collecting and monitoring others doing sampling work using excavators and drill rigs; researching geology and land status; contacting landowners and land managers as needed; collect field data and field notes and compile reports; have a basic knowledge of Windows Office and ArcGIS software.

Information produced include various maps, data reports, field logs and field notes, and calculations of quantities and distribution of test data. Maps, reports and calculations are used by NDOT internally, and distributed to outside government and private end users. Travel can be up to 50% of the time on an irregular schedule. Travel can occur throughout the state for up to an entire work week in all seasons and weather conditions and is required to accomplish the job duties. A 4 wheel drive truck is assigned for travel use. A driver license from the state of Nevada is required at appointment. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Certification by the Nevada State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors as an Engineer Intern; OR Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field; OR two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an Engineering Technician III in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Notes Employees in this class who are not registered professional engineers may not represent themselves as such to other persons or entities. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and for continuing employment.
