    The Position

    Orientation and Mobility Instructors provide specialized training to blind and visually impaired clients in orientation, mobility and the use of low vision aids in clients' worksite, school, residence and other locations within the community; supervise Rehabilitation Instructors and may supervise Rehabilitation Technicians; and counsel clients in achieving a positive self- image.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action.

    The Rehabilitation Division of DETR is comprised of three bureaus, which include Vocational Rehabilitation, Services to the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Bureau of Disability Adjudication. The services that are provided are designed to address assessment, training, treatment, and job placement for Nevadans with disabilities. The division places primary emphasis on providing necessary services to help clients work and live independently. This Orientation and Mobility Instructor 2 position provides orientation and mobility training to clients who are blind or visually impaired. The incumbent performs evaluations; develops service plans for clients; tracks service outcomes; handles orientation & mobility case management; and completes special projects. In addition, the incumbent supervises a Rehabilitation Instructor and a Rehabilitation Technician 2. The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service skills.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in rehabilitation of the blind, orientation and mobility, rehabilitation teaching or special education and one year of professional experience providing training in orientation, mobility and the use of low vision aids to blind or visually impaired clients in a rehabilitation setting; OR one year of experience as an Orientation and Mobility Instructor I in Nevada State service. Special Requirements A valid driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview.     The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864.

    Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
