SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under direct supervision of the recreation supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting in the engagement of instructors, filling available times for classes, and working with all contracted and volunteer group exercise instructors for the Senior Recreation Center to engage substitute instructors as needed. This position is responsible for evaluating the quality of the group exercise classes, member’s needs and enhancing the program accordingly.

Essential Functions/Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in the training, selection, supervision and evaluation of the group exercise class instructors.
  • Fosters professional standards among instructors and members.
  • Monitors instructors to ensure they are providing safe, fun and motivational group exercise classes.
  • Promotes all facilities, programs and services when in contact with members and/or guests.
  • Creates and maintains the group exercise schedule.
  • Tracks and reports usage statistics for all group exercise classes to ensure the facility is offering a strong variety with the best instructors available.
  • Teaches group exercise classes, and subs for classes when instructor is not available.
  • Conducts oneself at all times in a manner of professionalism that aligns with the values, philosophies and standards of Senior Recreation Center .
  • Attends all scheduled employee meetings.
  • Adheres to all written mandatory standards of operation, policies, procedures, manuals, memos, and oral instructions, etc.
  • Arrives to work every day, on time as scheduled.
  • Exercises good interpersonal skills by gladly assisting others to accomplish the work of the organization, even if it is outside the scope of regular duties. Respond to people, staff and the public in a tactful, professional and pleasant manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND BEHAVIORS
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of fitness and other classes.
  • Skill to conduct fitness courses, both as a sub or as an instructor for specific classes.
  • Skill to create and maintain scheduling for all fitness and other classes.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment; contribute as a team member and treat co-workers, subordinates and customers with respect.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must hold a current group exercise certification from one of the following groups: American Council on Exercise (ACE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), or Cooper Institute
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess or obtain First Aid/CPR certification within first 30 days of hire
  • Basic computer and phone skills required. Basic office applications required (proficient in Word, Excel, and Publisher).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous supervisory experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • No visible body piercing, tattoos or unnatural hair color.


Physical Demands/Supplemental

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regularly required to sit, stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Must be able to see, speak, and hear to conduct classes. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free. Occasionally, it may be wet and humid, as well as moderately loud. The outdoor work environment may result in exposure to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold and humidity.
