Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:To offer emotional and spiritual guidance, comfort, and support to Loveland Police Department staff and their families, by ordained Chaplains or vowed men and women in religious communities. To be proactive in building rapport and fostering relationships within the department. To be reactive, to include help in times of crisis or distress. Sometimes referred to as a ministry of presence, chaplaincy can include both physical presence as well as emotional presence through empathic listening, and the availability of both.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Chaplains will only provide support and guidance when requested by the affected employee or family member and services are completely optional.
  • Chaplaincy is a Ministry of Presence and not an opportunity to proselytize.
  • The Chaplain Program is religiously neutral until the person in need requests religious information or insight. Chaplains will support an overall goal of mindfulness and spiritual health for individuals with any, or no religious affiliation.
  • Loveland Police Chaplains will provide safe and confidential support in preventative interactions, amid challenging situations, and after a crisis.
  • Provide pastoral care and assistance to those facing issues such as: emotional support, spiritual needs, moral and ethical concerns, marriage, family, and relationship conflicts, job stress, substance abuse, and suicidal ideation.
  • Develop trusted and known relationships within the organization.
  • To provide compassion and support to those in crisis.
  • When requested, Chaplains may respond to assist the Victim Services Unit with death notifications, unattended deaths, or other calls for service as appropriate.
  • At the direction of the leadership team, Chaplains may be utilized in times of community crisis, such as a mass casualty event or natural disaster.
  • Serve as an ambassador between the community and the police department.
  • Assist with or represent the department in ceremonial functions such as funerals or memorial services.
  • Refer department employees and/or their family members to outside resources as appropriate.
  • Attend monthly meetings/training.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Be Ecclesiastically Endorsed - An Ecclesiastical Endorsement is the written acknowledgement by a faith/chaplaincy group/denomination that an individual is in good standing and meets the qualifications for clergy/chaplaincy credentials with their faith/chaplaincy group/denomination.
  • Five (5) years of ministry or chaplaincy experience preferred.
  • Chaplains can be:
    • Full-time or retired clergy duly ordained, licensed, commissioned, or appointed by their church, synagogue, or religious body.

or
  • Clergy trained individuals with Chaplain specific training and certification.

or
  • Ordained/licensed religious leader or clergy with professional experience with a religious organization or social service agency.
  • It is preferred that candidates possess at minimum an associate degree or equivalent and 60 additional hours of theological, ministerial or chaplaincy training. However, commensurate life experience and training may be acceptable.
  • All prospective Chaplains must be willing to submit to an extensive background investigation.

Material and Equipment Directly Used: No special material or equipment required.

Working Environment/Physical Activities: Walking, standing, running, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, crawling, bending, climbing, feeling, talking, seeing at night, hearing and conducting repetitive motions. Wide range of environmental conditions from sub-zero to humid, high temperatures
