    DUTIES

    ANNUAL SALARY

    $110,100 (flat-rated)

    A Wastewater Treatment Mechanic performs a variety of skilled tasks in maintaining, overhauling and assembling mechanical equipment and auxiliaries associated with combustion equipment, boilers, cryogenic equipment, large diesel engines, pumps, compressors, barscreens, collectors, clarifiers, centrifuges, conveyors, heat exchangers, emissions control equipment, and other equipment found in a wastewater treatment plant or a wastewater collection system; or performs the more difficult and skilled mechanical work with limited supervisory responsibility over a small crew.

    REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

    Two years of full-time paid experience as a Mechanical Repairer or Steam Plant Assistant with the City of Los Angeles in the repair of diesel equipment or wastewater equipment; or Two-years of full-time paid experience as a millwright or machinist repairing diesel or wastewater equipment in an industrial facility; or Four years of full-time paid experience assisting in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, or performance of semi-skilled manual tasks in construction and repair activities. One year of this experience must be assisting in the maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment.

    PROCESS NOTES
    Some positions may require a valid California Class A or B driver’s license and valid medical certificate approved by the State of California Department of Motor Vehicles prior to appointment. Candidates may not be eligible for appointment to these positions if their record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation (such as DUI). Candidates will be asked to submit a commercial driving history in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles CVC Section 1808.1 prior to appointment.Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience requirement is met.

    In accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2, all applicants who apply may not be tested in this examination. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Los Angeles City promotional applicants who meet the minimum requirements. You must have received a regular appointment to a City position or be on a reserve list to apply for this examination as a promotional candidate; 2) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles on a part-time or exempt basis who meet the minimum requirements; 3) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applicants not selected to be tested may re-apply in a subsequent filing period in order to be considered for that period's selection process.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    Examination Weight: Multiple-Choice . . . . . 100%

    The examination will consist of a weighted multiple-choice test administered and proctored on-line. In the on-line multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension; Judgment and Decision Making; Teamwork; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: Cal/OSHA regulations and safety principles and practices related to personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment; the safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment; equipment isolation procedures, such as Lockout/Tag-out/Block-out, identification and isolation of hazardous energy sources, and ensuring machinery is rendered inoperative prior to maintenance; Equipment Operation, including knowledge of: blowers, compressors, pumps, and auxiliaries, including gear reducers, lubrication, and fasteners; hand and power tools, such as impact wrenches, drivers and drills; equipment, such as dial indicators, laser alignment, and pneumatic tools; Mechanical Aptitude, including knowledge of: methods of repair and overhaul of water reclamation equipment, such as gas and air-compressor units, pumps, gear drivers, and boiler auxiliary equipment; terminology commonly used in mechanical repair work related to alignment, tolerances, output, and pump; common problems encountered related to wastewater equipment, such as abnormal temperatures and noises and mechanical issues, including a pump with low flow, no flow, or cavitation; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities.

    The multiple-choice test will be proctored and administered on-line during a single session. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test as instructed from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Candidates will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the dates and specific steps on how to take the multiple-choice test on-line. Candidates who do not complete and submit the remote proctored multiple-choice test on-line using a computer by the specified date and time will not be considered further in this examination.

    For candidates who apply during Filing Period 1, it is anticipated that the on-line multiple-choice test will be administered between TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 2023 and MONDAY, MARCH 20, 2023.

    For candidates who apply during Filing Period 2, it is anticipated that the on-line multiple-choice test will be administered between WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20, 2024 and TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2024.
