Position Summary: Responds to unusual or emergency situations at hospital property to include quick care sites using the appropriate escalation of force level up to and including armed response by following established protocol. Job Requirement Education/Experience: Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience as an armed security officer or law enforcement official or armed military services, or two (2) years of experience as a public safety officer in a hospital setting with the completion of a certified firearm's course. Licensing/Certification Requirements: Must possess a valid class C Nevada driver’s license. Must be able to meet and successfully pass defensive tactics, weapons retention certification, and background standards set by UMC. The ability to pass a background investigation to legally own and possess a firearm within the laws of the State of Nevada. The ability to qualify and maintain qualifications with department issued firearms based on departmental and State of Nevada standards. Must maintain annual certification training in de-escalation techniques. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Physical Requirements Knowledge of: Techniques and applications of self-defense and proper use of force; methods and techniques used in interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects; vicinity streets and roadways; laws and regulations such as illegal activity, safety and fire regulations and hazardous materials; safety precautions; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; application of use of force continuum, patient’s rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and procedures. Skill in: Applying negotiation techniques and practices; effectively using and qualifying with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms, batons, defensive tactics and other safety equipment; restraining and calming combative and irate people; demonstrating proficiency in weapon use and retention; handling emergency situations such as bomb threats, hostage situations, gang violence and fires; analyzing situations/incidents as they occur for the appropriate use of department approved weapons and the appropriate/reasonable level of force based on use of force options; to ride and maintain safe operation of multi-geared bike and other bike equipment; investigating suspicious people and crime scenes; writing incident reports; developing public relations with a variety of people; using equipment and tools such as radios, battery chargers, handcuffs, restraints, pepper spray and cameras; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relations with all personnel contacted in the course of duties; efficient, effective and safe use of equipment. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Mobility to work throughout the hospital in a variety of environments; stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time or dexterity and mobility to ride a multi-geared bicycle for extended periods of time; vision to read printed materials and VDT screens; hearing and speech to communicate effectively in-person, over the telephone and over the radio. Strength and agility to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and/or restrain. Works in environments and under conditions that require carrying authorized weapons and ammunition, the use of protective gear and devices, and awareness of personal safety and safety of others. For Bike Patrol must attend and pass the Las Vegas Metro Police Department Bicycle Training Course. For Armed Safety Officer must be able to meet and continue to meet any applicable state, county and municipal licensing and permit requirements for firearm semiannually.
