RESTRICTED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYESS OF THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES WHO HAVE SUSSESSFULLY COMPLECTED THEIR INITIAL PROBATIONARY PERIOD.

Current employees in the unclassified service in the County of Los Angeles who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam:

Unclassified employees who have attained permanent County status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service.

Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service at the time of filing.

ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. DHS operates as an integrated health system, operating 25 health centers and four acute care hospitals, in addition to providing health care to youth in the juvenile justice system and inmates in the LA County jails. Across the network of DHS' directly operated clinical sites and through partnerships with community-based clinics, DHS annually provides direct care for over 600,000, unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual operating budget of over $6.9 billion.

Through academic affiliations with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Southern California (USC), and the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings.

DEFINITION:
Heads a sheet metal section comprised of not more than seven journey-level and sub-journey-level positions where no higher level supervisor in the craft is present; or under the direction of a higher level sheet metal supervisor, supervises and participates in the work of a crew of five or more positions of journey-level and sub-journey-level; or is first assistant to a higher level supervisor in charge of a sheet metal section.

Essential Job Functions

Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects the work of sheet metal workers, other skilled craft workers, apprentices and helpers in the installation, fabrication, assembly and repair of sheet metal articles and equipment.

Lays out jobs and estimates labor and material requirements.

Ensures that code requirements, safety regulations and safe work practices are observed.

Makes periodic inspections of existing sheet metal equipment and systems.

Determines work methods and types of materials to be used.

Orders and maintains stock of materials and supplies.

Performs the work of a journey-level sheet metal worker.

Makes rough sketches showing material, gauges and dimensions.

Supervises the maintenance of tools and equipment.

Maintains work records.

Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites in order to transport the necessary tools, equipment, and materials required to perform the job.

Inspects, on delivery, sheet metal work supplied by outside contractors.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Two years' journey-level experience in sheet metal work in the building trades.

Journey-level experience applies to a person who has completed an apprenticeship program or is an experienced worker, not a trainee, and is fully qualified and able to perform a specific trade without supervision.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS III - MODERATE :
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Additional points will be awarded for additional experience beyond the minimum requirements.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of two parts:

Part I : An evaluation of experience based upon application information, weighted 50%. Additional points will be awarded for additional experience beyond the minimum requirements.

Part II: An Appraisal of Promotability which will evaluate knowledge and skills, problem solving, productivity, supervision, verbal/written communication & comprehension, weighted 50% .

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on this examination in order to be added to the eligible register.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:


Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score in the examination will be added to the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.

Available Shift

Appointees may be required to work any shift including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
