    Position Information

    This is a Temporary and/or hourly intermittent appointment. No probationary period. No permanent status is granted.

    Conditions of Employment

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    The salary range for this classification is: $13.00 to $19.50 per hour.

    Position Summary

    Under general supervision, a Reader serves print-impaired persons by speaking aloud to provide voice renderings of printed material as perceived visually and to provide voice accounts of visual situations, events or objects. A Reader may also perform related tasks requiring sight which cannot be performed by a print-impaired person, i.e., visually impaired, learning-disabled or dexterity-limited persons. The more difficult assignments within the class may require familiarity with specialized vocabulary and specific subject matter.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge and Abilities:

    Knowledge of college-level instructional procedures. Ability to follow instructions; maintain good working relationships with print impaired persons served and the faculty; pronounce words found in college-level tests; read a wide variety of types of printed material; locate books in a library and to be able to manipulate printed materials; use dictionaries to verify the correct pronunciation of words; speak orally with a clear voice with good diction; operate recording equipment to produce recordings according to guidelines; ability to describe an event, object, or activity orally and completely; and follow a schedule dependably and be punctual.

    Experience:

    Equivalent to evidence of the required knowledge and abilities and experience in reading orally to a person, making oral recordings, taking an oral part in a play or making oral presentations to groups or completion of classes in speech. Experience as a college student is desirable.

    Responsibilities

    The essential skill requires the ability to comprehend the meaning of texts by perceiving the form of printed or written characters and to translate these to a voice account; to comprehend college-level material and concepts; to be able to identify main points and unusual terms; and to speak clearly with good diction and cadence, good grammar, and proper pronunciation. The Reader has the ethical responsibility to provide the person being served with as accurate and complete a rendering of the printed text as possible.

    Examples of Typical Activities:

    A Reader provides oral renderings or makes recordings of requested printed materials to a second party. Requests may involve preparing descriptive oral accounts of field trips, in a manner which can serve as study notes. Such notes may need to be converted to a recording.

    Recordings produced typically provide a word-for-word voice rendering of printed materials such as books, textbooks, journals, periodicals, notes, tests, chalkboard writing, correspondence, directives, laboratory instructions, labels, syllabi and catalogs. A Reader translates print to voice or makes tapes with a clear voice and emphasizes or spells unusual, difficult or key words. In preparing recordings, the Reader must operate recording equipment, following instructions for proper identification of the recording and its subparts, following exactly any guidelines provided, indicating organization of the material or providing emphasis of major elements and must use clear diction and correct pronunciation. The recordings must be free of background noises and the speech cadence must be appropriate to use of the material for educational purposes.

    Readers may read library index cards and guides to assist the student in locating materials in a library. Library research involving deciding the suitability of materials is not a duty of the Reader. Readers may assist students by reading to assist in preparation for tests or in actually reading test questions during the test.
