The Department The Women’s and Gender Studies Department at Sonoma State University enables students to explore the social, political, and cultural dimensions of gender and inequity. WGS is the study of how gender structures everything from our innermost sense of self to transnational circuits of society and economy. Our department utilizes an intersectional perspective, which means that we understand gender to be co-constituted with race, ethnicity, sexuality, nation, ability, and other forms of social power. We use an interdisciplinary approach that examines social structures, institutions, and ideologies of gender through social, historical, political, legal, and cultural lenses.
Emphasizing the connections between theory and practice, Women’s and Gender Studies encourages applied learning through internships, service learning, cultural production, and research. Our department’s pedagogy, curriculum, scholarship, and service foster critical awareness and build community. The WGS Department’s general education courses and lecture series produce campus-wide transformative consciousness, while our major courses further depth and engagement. WGS extends its legacy as a campus and community change agent through its faculty, courses, service, students, and alumnus. The WGS Department is central to Sonoma State's Strategic Plan 2025 Core Values of "diversity and social justice."

An intersectional feminist analysis facilitates critical exploration of power, difference, and the production of knowledge. Duties of the Position Each semester, we anticipate needing several lecturers to teach classes across the WGS major. These courses are usually general education (GE) and occasionally WGS core major classes. Instructors teaching courses are responsible for all aspects of course development following the provided master course syllabus and signature assignment prompts.

WGS 305 “LGBTQ US History” (GE D, AI- History)
WGS 370 “Gender and Asian America”
WGS 375 “Gender, Power and Freedom in US History” (GE D, AI-History)
WGS 385 “Transnational Feminisms”
WGS 450 “Women of Color Feminisms”
Professional Qualifications To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have :
- Required master's degree in Women’s and Gender Studies (or related field). Preferred Ph.D. in Women’s and Gender Studies (or related field with an emphasis in intersectional and/or transnational feminist, women, gender, sexuality studies).
- Demonstrated experience teaching in WGS and/or using feminist pedagogy.
- Explicit commitment supporting diverse student populations and educational equity.
Rank and Salary Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
- Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
- Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
- The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
- Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
- Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
- Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
- Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

Application procedures for temporary faculty already teaching in the department:
- Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
- Temporary Faculty who had a paid appointment during the prior academic year with your department (either one or both semesters); this includes Lecturers on the Re-Employment list are not required to apply through the Recruitment Pool unless they would like to be evaluated to teach additional courses, not currently designated as qualified to teach.
