    The Department

    Voted among the Most Wired, Top Green & Best Value schools in America (Princeton Review), the Sonoma State Department of Music offers multifarious performance opportunities in instrumental, choral, jazz, and music theatre. The Department is housed in the Donald and Maureen Green Music Center, a premiere performing arts complex that includes Joan and Sanford I. Weill Hall, a 1400-seat state of the art concert venue considered to be among the finest performance venues in the country, and Schroeder Recital Hall, a stunning 250-seat recital and chamber music venue. In addition, the Green Center includes an education wing comprised of rehearsal spaces, practice rooms, and conference facilities.

    Since Weill Hall’s Grand Opening in 2012, the breath-taking acoustics of this uniquely designed space have attracted such internationally renowned solo artists such as Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, John Adams, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Wynton Marsalis, and large ensembles including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the United States Marine and Navy Bands, and countless others.

    • Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education (Choral, Instrumental and Jazz Tracks)
    • Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies
    • Bachelor of Music degree Music Composition
    • Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, Liberal Studies concentration
    • Students may also pursue the Music minor

    Sonoma State University’s voice faculty are renowned performers, directors, and educators in the field. SSU’s Voice Program promotes a collaborative, supportive environment for individual, artistic, and technical development. The program features weekly voice lessons with renowned vocal artists and pedagogues as well as collaborative pianists who play in-lesson. Voice students regularly have the opportunity to perform in the Opera/Music Theatre mainstage production, Opera and Music Theatre Scenes, and to work with the SSU Department of Theatre Arts and Dance, Santa Rosa Symphony, Sonoma Bach, San Francisco Opera, and world-class guest artists from the Green Music Center’s multi-genre performance series. SSU also provides numerous opportunities for choral performance in its Symphonic Chorus, Concert Choir, and the select SonoVoce chamber choir.

    Department Philosophy

    At Sonoma State University, developing artists cultivate their individuality in an environment that emphasizes personalized instruction. Academic music classes are typically small making faculty approachable and accessible. Music majors receive weekly private lessons by faculty who are professional performers with prominent Bay Area organizations such as the San Francisco Symphony, SF Ballet and Opera orchestra, the Santa Rosa Symphony, The American Bach Soloists, The Philharmonia Orchestra, and numerous other Bay Area professional orchestras. The Department houses a number of large and small ensembles, thus providing students a wide variety of performance experiences.

    Department Curriculum

    The core curriculum for music majors is a rigorous program that provides a thorough foundation in such essential skills as keyboard facility, theoretical understanding, aural perception, and analysis of a wide range of music literature. All majors gain experience with both the intuitive and the intellectual processes of the art. The curriculum is designed to place the specialized study of music in the setting of a liberal arts education and to serve as a firm basis for careers in a wide variety of professions in music and those related to music. Private voice/instrument lessons are required of all music majors. All students attend a weekly repertoire class.

    Duties of the Position

    Primary duties involve teaching private lessons to students in the Bachelor of Music (BM) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Music degree programs. Potential for coaching ensembles and teaching other courses, as designated by the Department. We seek candidates who are dynamic educators who are willing to participate in department performances and events, actively involved in recruitment activities, and committed to building and maintaining a private instruction studio.

    Professional Qualifications

    Candidates for activity courses and private instruction must have college-level education in music and/or extensive professional performing and teaching experience. Master’s degree not required, but preferred.

    Rank and Salary

    Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.
    • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
    • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
    • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
    • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
    • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
    • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
    • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.
