WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movements in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is required in both the field and the office. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 70 pounds, such as a jackhammer, is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, heat, and cold. The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, dust chemicals, biohazard materials and air contaminants. Type of Appointment : Full-Time, Probationary Job Classification : Facilities Maintenance Mechanic Anticipated Hiring Amount : $5,787 per month ($69,444 annually) Work Hours : Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm, unless otherwise notified Recruitment Closing Date : May 22, 2024 THE DEPARTMENT: Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) serves as the lead organization for planning, developing, and maintaining the campus ‘natural and built environments in support of the university’s mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP’s history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs and functional requirements. FPM is comprised of approximately 200 facilities professionals (FTE) that also provides maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, and auto fleet services. The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscapers, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Working in a team environment, under the general supervision of the Manager of MEP Services and the Supervising and/or Lead Building Service Engineer and primarily responsible for the following: Responsible to perform general routine and preventative maintenance and repairs of the buildings’ mechanical equipment and associated apparatus including work on the utility infrastructure. Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on pumps, pump seals, pump bearings, motors, motor bearings and blower fan bearings, shaft alignments and air compressors. May work in a team or independently, to clean pools & decorative fountains, clean equipment rooms, collect utility meter readings, and perform other related duties as assigned by the shop supervisor and/or lead. Works with journeymen Building Service Engineers on inspecting, troubleshooting, diagnosing and performing preventative maintenance and complex repairs on stationary HVAC equipment such as boilers, chillers, ventilation systems, fans, motors, compressors, condensers, cooling towers, pumps, water treatment systems, and all other associated equipment related to HVAC systems. Distinguishing Features of the Class: A Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and general work in one of the major divisions of the Public Works, Parks or Support Services Departments, and may be temporarily assigned to other Departments within the City as required. Must possess the skills, knowledge and physical capabilities to perform the duties of the position and must comply with City and Department policies, procedures and methods at all times. Must demonstrate an ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision. A Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker is distinguished from a higher-level General Craftsworker by the latter acting in a lead capacity, possessing greater technical skills and knowledge and performing more difficult tasks. A Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker may train, supervise and direct the work of part-time, seasonal workers or temporary workers. Maintenance and Construction Craftsworkers are divided into Level I and Level II, and are distinguished by the latter possessing both a Commercial Driver's License and an approved certification requiring continuing education units. Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative Only) Water Division: Replaces, repairs, relocates and installs water lines; locates pipes and lines, repairs broken mains by applying full circle clamps to breaks or by cutting and removing old pipe and replacing with new section of pipe and adding quick couplers; taps into main water lines (wet or dry) to provide stub service to property; cuts asphalt street sections with concrete saw and removes concrete and dirt with shovel to reach pipes; backfills holes and trenches; installs and adjusts level of water meters and meter boxes; repairs and tests water meters; installs valves in water mains; tests and inspects large meters and pressure regulating valves (PRVs), performs leak detection using survey equipment, sets cones and barricades for traffic control; conducts pressure tests of water lines to determine leakage and breaks in water mains; maintains fire hydrants as required; may operate welding machine to thaw frozen lines; uses a dump truck, compaction wacker, pickup truck, concrete saw, tap machine, loader, jackhammer, boom truck, pressure pump and other similar equipment required for the maintenance, installation and repair of water lines; uses various hand tools, including shovels, wrenches and picks; performs routine preventative maintenance of equipment by checking oil, fluids, water and tire levels and advises superiors of mechanical or operational problems; performs routine housekeeping of City well sites, pump houses and the City shops and yard; and performs related work and weekend and overtime work as required. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Regardless of level, a Maintenance and Construction Craftsworker must meet the following minimum qualifications: must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. and at least six (6) months of previous work experience performing maintenance work, repairs, equipment operation and motor vehicle operation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated proficiency in construction and grounds maintenance. Demonstrated proficiency using maps and plans. Demonstrated proficiency in safely using required tools and operating required equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Driver’s License. Must possess or obtain the following within six (6) months: flagging, first aid, and any other appropriate certifications as required by law, ordinance or department regulations. May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within twelve (12) months of employment based on division standards (see below), and a minimum of a CDL learner's permit on the date of hire. PRESCRIPTION SAFETY GLASSES Reimbursement of up to $150/year for purchase of safety prescription glasses for EEs working in locations where there is a risk of eye injuries. SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL EEs regularly assigned to city facilities operating 24/7 - $2.50/hour for all hours worked when assigned to a shift requiring EE work at least 4 hours between 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 a.m. EQUIPMENT OPERATION Public Works EEs: $12.00/day for EE who operates Class A vehicle, min of 50%+ operation/day. STANDBY PAY 2 hours straight-time for standby on regularly scheduled work day 3 hours straight-time for standby on regularly scheduled days off and fixed City holidays CALL BACK PAY 3 hours min @ OT rate for FLSA nonexempt. First 3 hours can't be taken as comp time but paid to EE. WORK IN A HIGHER CLASS If work min of 3 consecutive workdays, paid @ 5% differential or the minimum of the salary range of the higher classification. COURT PAY/COURT CANCELLATION PAY If in connection with EE's usual official duties, 3 hrs min @ OT, or 4 hrs min @ OT for those required to appear on normal day off or on graveyard shift. SUPPORT SERVICES TRAINING OFFICER PAY $90/pay period for full pay period while assigned. BILINGUAL PAY $60/pay period for both written & conversational. Must be certified by Department Head and approved by Admin Services Director, and used on the job. $35/pay period for conversation level as certified by Department Head and approved by Admin Services Director. TELEPHONE PAY 20 minutes and for each minute exceeding 20 minutes at OT rate. CELL PHONE ALLOWANCE Standard = $40/month (if authorized) See Administrative Regulation 36 for details. COMMERCIAL DRIVERS' LICENSE PAY $35/pay period with valid CA Commercial Driver's License and valid DOT medical card.
