The Department Designed specifically for the pursuit of art practices and the study of art history, the Department of Art & Art History is housed in a spacious and well-equipped facility at the northwestern edge of the SSU campus. The department offers courses of study leading to a B.A. degree in Art History and B.A. and B.F.A. degrees in Studio Art, as well as a minor in Museum and Gallery Methods. The Studio Art curriculum is designed to develop the ability to create, analyze, interpret and evaluate art. The department strives to stimulate creativity and competency as students develop their skills and knowledge of materials and technologies. Fundamental to the study of art is a belief in its potential to communicate ideas, emotions, and values necessary for understanding and functioning effectively within the modern world. The Studio program prepares majors for careers in art and work at the graduate level. Our curriculum also emphasizes past and present forms of resistance and activism such as Chicano rights movement, labor activism, the Puerto Rican struggle for independence, and others. Courses in CALS invite students to critically examine the experiences and contributions of Latinx populations in relation to issues of political representation, linguistic policy, educational inequality, poverty, immigration, and symbolic struggles in media, literature, and the arts. Our department’s pedagogy and curriculum encourage critical awareness of the intersection between race, ethnicity, power, and social institutions. The department currently offers courses in advertising, broadcast journalism, film, photography, digital journalism, public relations and video production. College: College of Education Position Title: Part-time Temporary Lecturer in Applied and Advanced Studies in Education (AASE) Division of Applied and Advanced Studies in Education (AASE) Instructional Faculty - Part-time Temporary/Lecturer Pool Position Details: The Applied & Advanced Studies in Education Division in the College of Education at Cal State LA, is seeking applications for a pool of part-time faculty lecturers with positions available as determined by need during the 2024-2025 academic year. Positions will be filled as needed for each academic semester. Part-time faculty lecturers are hired with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Hires from the pool of applicants are made when there are instructional needs to fill coursework offered by an academic department based on changing enrollment patterns, changes to tenure-track faculty assignments, and other factors that cannot be addressed with existing faculty. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, but occasionally academic year initial appointments are made. Appointments may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance.
