The City of Gilroy is recruiting for two full-time Community Services Officers. The Gilroy Police Department is located 28 miles south of San Jose, in Santa Clara County, and serves a diverse population of approximately 60,000 residents. The Mission of the Gilroy Police Department is: Providing excellent public safety services in partnership with the community. This recruitment process and eligibility list may be used to fill two (2) openings and may be used over the next year to fill additional future openings should they become available.    

Under the general direction of a Police Sergeant, the Community Services Officer (CSO) will provide general assistance to the operations and support services divisions.  Incumbents in this job classification may be assigned to work in a specialized unit.  Assignments may include but are not limited to the following:  patrol operations, animal control, crime prevention, volunteer program, graffiti abatement, and neighborhood outreach and revitalization services.  Employees assigned to work in the Patrol unit may also assist with traffic services and enforce State and local parking ordinances, process citations issued, and perform other traffic-related services.

  • Show empathy and support during difficult situations with animals/pets.
  • Possess a strong understanding and respect for a structured chain-of-command. 
  • Be technologically savvy with the ability to work with various electronic devices, office equipment, and software programs.
  • Have a professional appearance, and demeanor, and project confidence when interacting with the public.  
  • Maintain a positive “can do” attitude and provide support and assistance to Patrol teams as requested.
  • Be a positive representative and role model in the Gilroy community.
  • Quickly learn and apply the policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the work of a Community Services Officer.
  • Possess prior public safety and/or public service experience with substantial interaction and problem resolution with members of the community. 
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to being an excellent Community Services Officer and become a future Police Officer should aspirations to do so arise.

Job Requirements


  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Prefer a minimum of one (1) year of full-time work experience in Public Service.
  • Work an assigned shift with varied days and/or hours; may be required to work holidays and weekends.  
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s). 
  • Pass a physical agility test. Please note: Candidates identified for further consideration will be required to complete and pass a physical agility test consistent with the job duties and requirements for the position of Community Services Officer. This testing includes running, crawling, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and jumping. 
  • Be able to meet the current medical standards for CSO and be free from any physical condition which might adversely affect the exercise of power as a CSO.
  • Pass a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) background investigation, which include a polygraph examination, an extensive Department of Justice criminal record check, and an FBI check. 
  • Pass a post-offer psychological evaluation and a medical examination, which includes a drug test. 
  • Pass all required department training. 
  • Possess and maintain CPR and First Aid Certificates within six (6) months of hire. 
  • Prefer bilingual (English/Spanish). 
  • Prefer a non-tobacco user.
