The district has 35 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 10 high schools and 4 early learning centers. 19 schools are designated as innovative.  TPS has nearly 5,000 employees and is one of the largest employers in Tacoma.   

    Job Description

    Hours per day: 8

    Salary Level: PT 9 - Range is $55.51/hour - $71.95/hour depending on verifiable like experience

    This position manages and maintains the integrity and availability of the District’s Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure, applications, and related technologies for optimum efficiency and effectiveness; provides support for District servers, both on premise and cloud based; supports Windows and Linux server operating systems (OS), supports security devices, firewalls, URL filters, Active Directory and Exchange email services; ensures performance and availability meet service level agreements (SLA) and objectives; conceptualizes, documents, and communicates solutions to meet District objectives.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    1. Maintains and troubleshoots network operations to ensure the LANs are functional on a continuous basis; makes necessary repairs when required; maintains Layer 2 (L2) and Layer 3 (L3) switches, wireless equipment, Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS); ensures appropriate network standards and support/maintenance procedures are being followed.

    2. Manages, monitors, and assigns software licensing, a needed; maintains compliance with Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) Microsoft, and other vendor licensing agreements.

    3. Oversees exchange settings, adds users, and manages domains and licenses; supports exchange accounts using the O365 console; supports email archiving.

    4. Provides direct technical support, diagnostics, problem resolutions, integration, and systems maintenance of the LAN environment; performs root cause analysis to quickly recover from service interruptions, and to prevent recurring problems.

    5. Maintains on premise and cloud-based data; maintains file systems at both premise and cloud-based locations; uses Distributed File System (DFS), Azure File System (AFS), SharePoint on-line or other related activities.

    6. Performs troubleshooting and resolves issues with servers running windows or Linux OS; maintains all server hardware; maintains server patches and health utilities (examples: Instructional Management Center (IMC), OneView, and Network Performance Manager (NPM).

    7. Assists Senior Analysts with maintaining District mission critical server hardware and software, applying upgrades and routine server software patches when necessary.

    8. Assists the Senior Networking Analyst when needed with installing, troubleshooting, maintaining and monitoring, the Institutional Network (I-NET) and Wide Area Network (WAN).

    9. Monitors and communicates to stakeholders the performance of services; ensures service delivery meets the District requirements based on SLAs; provides weekly key performance metrics and status updates to key stakeholders.

    10. Serves as a resource person to District staff in the use of LAN related equipment and associated software packages; acts as a resource for testing new network hardware/software and develops procedures for District implementation.

    11. Writes technical and functional specifications for documents and reports; tracks and maintains appropriate documentation of the District LANs; maintains inventory of server equipment; maintains server logs of all District servers; prepares and maintains assigned reports and logs of pertinent departmental and network information; provides reports to District stakeholders on progress of tasks assigned.

    12. Provides estimates of time for completion of assigned tasks to appropriate District staff and/or administrator and stakeholders; records actual time used.

    OTHER JOB DUTIES

    1. Maintains and updates knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development activities, as needed or assigned.

    2. Assists appropriate department staff during peak workloads and absences; provides backup assistance for other technical support staff for special projects, when assigned.

    3. Performs special projects and related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.

    4. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

    Education and Experience

    Associate’s degree in computer science, information systems, or related field or compatible vocational-technical training; Bachelor’s degree, preferred; four years of experience with Local Area Networks (LAN), Active Directory (AD) administration, Exchange and Windows Server administration, Cloud Technology administration; experience and knowledge of public school environment, preferred; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

    Required Licenses/Special Requirements

    Valid Washington driver’s license and access to personal transportation.

    Microsoft certification, preferred.

    Aruba or HP certifications, desired.

    Proof of training and/or certification, required, if applicable.

    Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance.

    Allowable Substitution

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be evaluated by the Human Resources

    Department for comparability.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange and its interaction with Active Directory.

    Considerable knowledge in Active Directory.

    Considerable knowledge of network/email related protocols (FTP, SNMP, SMTP, WMI, DHCP, and DNS).

    Knowledge of file systems (NTFS, DFS, AFS, …).

    Knowledge of firewall methodology.

    Skill in project management.

    Skill with MS AD CS / SCEP & Maintaining Public and Internal Certificates on different platforms (Windows IIS, NPS, CPPM, etc.).

    Skill in oral and written communication.

    Skill in creating PowerShell scripts to schedule repeatable Exchange and Active Directory actions.

    Skill in presentation and interpersonal communication.

    Skill in collaborating with staff to make most informed decisions about current state of District.

    Skill in managing user authentication through Azure Active Directory (AD) single sign on.

    Skill in system/process orientation.

    Skill in developing and organizing high-quality documentation.

    Skill in attention to detail.

    Skill in analytical thinking and problem solving.

    Skill in parsing logs and advanced trouble shooting.

    Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

    Ability to install and configure network operating systems in a local area environment (Linux, Win2008 or above).

    Ability to troubleshoot all issues with domain keys identified mail (DKIM), domain message authentication reporting (DMARC), sender policy framework (SPF), and domain name system (DNS).

    Ability to relate the goals of information technology (IT) service delivery to District’s goals.

    Ability to perform testing and problem resolution analysis on various types of microcomputer peripheral equipment and networks.

    Ability to organize, prioritize, execute tasks, and meet deadlines with effective follow through.

    Ability to work independently, exercise good judgement, and make decisions.

    Ability to obtain, clarify and exchange information.

    Ability to analyze complex problems.

    Ability to focus on delivering quality customer service.

    Ability to take the initiative to learn and research new concepts, ideas, and technologies.
