    The City of Sanibel, an environmentally sensitive, sanctuary island is located in southwest Florida, with 24 miles of shoreline, of which 11 miles are along the beautiful emerald green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Incorporated in 1974, the City has a current population of 6,591 residents, with a seasonal fluctuation around 33,000. The City of Sanibel has more than 25 miles of paved shared use paths and has earned the distinguished "Gold" designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.  The average temperature on Sanibel Island is a beautiful 74 degrees.

    Description

    Senior level position under the general direction of the City Manager, the Resilience & Sustainability Coordinator serves as the City’s lead in establishing effective and actionable strategies to improve Sanibel’s resilience to environmental threats or challenges, such as rising sea levels, hurricanes, and other climate-related impacts, and increasing the City’s sustainable practices, including the use of renewable energy.

    Duties

    The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

    Develops and has primary responsibility for completing/implementing policies, regulations, and objectives to meet the City Council’s Strategic Goal for Community Resiliency, which states: Build Sanibel’s resilience to future threats from natural and manmade events by mitigating hazards, hardening infrastructure, encouraging the use of reliable, renewable energy sources, continually updating vulnerability, response, and recovery plans, and improving community education concerning building design, building codes, flood protection and the benefits of native vegetation.

    Develop and implement comprehensive climate adaptation plans to address the potential impacts of storm threats, sea level rise, and climate change on the community.

    Conduct vulnerability assessments to identify areas at risk from climate change and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.

    Engage with local stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and government agencies, to promote awareness and participation in resilience and sustainability initiatives.

    Identify and apply for grants to fund resilience and sustainability projects. Manage grant-funded projects to ensure compliance with funding requirements.

    Collect and analyze data related to climate impacts, sustainability metrics, and community resilience. Use this data to inform decision-making and policy development.

    Develop and deliver educational programs and materials to inform the community about resilience and sustainability practices.

    Work with regional and state agencies, non-profits, and other organizations to coordinate resilience and sustainability efforts.

    Possess initiative and independent performance, and contact and coordination with other Departments and Divisions, and regional and state agencies.

    Plans and coordinates reviews with other Departments and outside agencies.

    Prepares and presents oral and written reports.

    May require driving a motor vehicle to accomplish assigned tasks.

    This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee’s physical presence at the workplace.

    Assists with special projects as assigned. Performs related work as required and as directed.

    Required Education, Experience, License, Registration, and Certification Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field; and
    • Five (5) years of related experience in resilience planning, sustainability, environmental management, or a related field.
    • An equivalent combination of education, training, certification and experience will be considered.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire or promotion.
    The preferred candidate will have the following additional qualifications and experience:
    • A Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field
    • Certification in sustainability or resilience planning.
    • Experience working in coastal communities.
    • Knowledge of Florida’s environmental regulations and policies.


    Supplemental or Additional Information

    • Strong knowledge and understanding of climate science and sustainability principles.
    • Knowledge of Florida ecology and ecosystems.
    • Knowledge and experience in environmental planning terminology, principles, and practices.
    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislation and programs pertaining to environmental permitting, protection, and restoration.
    • Knowledge of site assessments, monitoring, and reporting.
    • Knowledge of conflict resolution.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
    • Strong time-management skills.
    • Strong technical-writing skills.
    • Intermediate to advanced office software computer skills and mapping and data-entry computer software skills; data collection and evaluation techniques. Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
    • Proficiency in ESRI GIS is desirable.
    • Knowledge of Energov, City View, or other enterprise permitting software is desirable.
    • Ability to perform highly specialized duties requiring knowledge of island vegetation and natural resource best management practices.
    • Ability to review site plan drawings and specifications.
    • Ability to manage, plan, organize and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs.
    • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data, conduct short and long-range natural resources planning, recognize, and solve natural resource management issues, maintain complex records, and draft technical reports.
    • Ability to effectively represent the organization to local, state, and federal officials and the general public on policy/procedures and present technical information, ideas, and recommendations clearly and succinctly in written and verbal form.
    • Ability to possess initiative and independent performance in coordination with other Departments within the City, and regional and state agencies.
    • Ability to establish and maintain diverse, effective working relationships and interact in a positive, collaborative and professional manner with colleagues, outside organizations, and the general public.
    • Ability to organize own work, setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
    • Skill in adapting to a changing work environment, competing demands and ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
